Realised this morning that I can't use my car this weekend as the MoT has expired (two days ago)!
That has never happened before.
Normally, it just gets done by the BMW dealership in early December when it goes in either for a service or the winter wheel swap, which means not needing to think about it. But when I booked the service and winter wheel swap with BMW in early November for the end of November, they couldn't give me an MoT slot before 16 December. So I had to arrange it separately and of course forgot.
No local Kwikfit can now do an MoT before Christmas, let alone this weekend. However, fortunately there's a line of varied car-related business literally under the arches about a mile away, one of which specialises in BMW servicing and does MoTs. They aren't open at weekends but do answer the phone and can slot me in on Monday.
Really annoyed with myself for not realising earlier, but have been pretty busy and stressed with work.

It happens, still kicking myself over the recent minor bump.

One of my staff found that her MOT was overdue by over 4 months when she went to get insurance (the insurance company told her, so they must check). A client was able to do it for her on the same day but it shows that all these cameras and Police cars don't pick everything up.

The MoT situation is all messed up at the moment by the 6 month extensions initially invoked at Lockdown 1. There must be a load of cars whose MoT was originally due 6 months ago whose MoT is now due, on top of all those due now anyway. I always try to arrange annual servicing at MoT time so that I book both together, I find that the easiest way to remember to get the MoT done

I thought the iDrive reminded you? I’m sure mine says that the first statutory inspection is Sept 21.

I thought the iDrive reminded you? I’m sure mine says that the first statutory inspection is Sept 21. The BMWs I’ve had showed the MOT date in the service menu. You’d think it would come up with a countdown like it does for the other items in there but the 7 didn’t quite get to MOT time and I think the one the 535d had was done early because it was the same time as the service so not sure. Missing it is easily done though. I read about a new app that might be useful. It’s called Caura and it automatically picks up your insurance and MOT renewal dates and will remind you, plus of perhaps more use, it links in to most of the parking apps, Dartford Crossing, congestion charge etc, so one app covers most things.

Can’t be too overrun when Racing managed to get an appointment in less than 1 working day. I booked a service yesterday, thinking I was probably leaving it a bit tight for the 2nd week in January, but both dealerships I called could have got me in at the end of next week.

You'd think that if you use a garage regularly they'd remind you? After all, it's business for them.

You'd think that if you use a garage regularly they'd remind you? After all, it's business for them. The one we use for the Mini and the E46 previously gives you a postcard to fill in as you collect your new mot. Then when it’s time you get a postcard from yourself to remind you.

Well I think it depends where you go. As I say BMW Battersea were booking seven weeks ahead when I rang at the start of November. Kwikfit here has a three week backlog. But as I said I'm lucky that there's a line of car repair places under the railway arches about a mile away and I suspect they get less trade than the big franchises. Not used this place before but I dropped my car off this morning and whilst it was the classic oily little under the arches outfit down a narrow and shabby alley by the railway line, it looked well-equipped inside and they only had BMWs in, including an E60 M5 and an F10 M5, so that was reassuring, and I liked the two guys I met. Hopefully will all be uneventful.
