The XFR went into the garage last Friday for its annual service and MOT. It was just as well I went to move it on the Thursday night as the battery was completely dead. So I left it on charge overnight and it started with no problem. I got to the garage OK and left it with them. Only to be called an hour later to say that the battery was dead (again). So, time for a new battery whilst it was there. The car is now nine years old and I've had it five years. So I suspect that may have been the original battery, in which case it has done pretty well.
After that excitement, everything else was OK and the car passed its MOT today with no advisories. With lockdown and using the MINI so much, it had only done 2000 miles in the past year.
But I think I may be in for a more expensive year next year. The rear brakes are down to a few mm on the pads and wear on the discs to match, so that'll be about £600 for the rears. Also, the winter rears are almost worn, so if I'm going to keep winter and summer sets going, I'll need winter rears and probably summer rears too later on. Winter 285/30 R20's are between £380 and £420 each (Michelin or Pirelli). Summers of that size are £200-ish for most decent stuff but up to £320 for PZ4's. I think if the miles are to remain low, I might just forget winters and use the MINI (even more).

Good news. At that annual mileage you could easily not bother with winters (what a crazy price - will that drop if you look again in the hotter weather though?).
I dropped the Toyota off at lunchtime, MOT tomorrow. It's done just over 1,000 miles since last year.

My Benz, at five years old, has only just clocked over to 20,000 miles. Just over 2,200 of those since the beginning of August when I bought it. Trying to decide if it is worth getting a a set of winter wheels and tyres, but no suitably tempting bargains at the moment.

What size are they James, I have the OEM winters for the c class coming available soon, barely used tyres.

It is on 18s, but I would happily use 17s in winter.
Or might be on 19s. I shall have to check.

My milage is down a lot this year too. I'm glad I don't still have the TVR sat gathering dust.
The Defender has done just under 5000 miles since March. I normally do 12k a year in that and I averaged 3-5k in the TVR.

It is on 18s at the moment. The official MB fitment for winter tyres is either 245/40 R18 97H XL or 245/45 R17 99H XL

Well it's been an expensive week motoring wise. Jag major service, new battery, MOT £770. And just picked up the horse lorry after a service, new discs and pads all round, few other small items and VOSA test (as its rated at 4 tonnes) £850. The first was a main dealer. The lorry was mates rates from a friend who has his own transport company. I dread to think what that would have been from a main dealer as there was 9 hours of labour.
Bread and water for tea tonight.

You need to start using the XFR more to improve the cost per mile! There's always a perfectly sensible man maths solution to every problem.

PG , on the winter tyres front I have always managed to find on Ebay "new old stock" of the older pattern sottozeroes, only for the rear, they seem to be 4-5 years old and often from German Jag dealers or tyre dealers - presumably they can't sell tyres over that age. They have been around the £105 mark which is a steal compared to the insane cost of the winters in our fitment (and the XFR-S summer wheels I have are worse, being an odd 295-based size than only Pirelli and Michelin make). I agree that not using winters, and using the mini instead, may make more sense, but have a look around if you do want new ones. This winter, if I did not have two sets on wheels already, I would not bother with winter tyres either, for now at least I don't need to drive - though I suppose we may visit Germany again at some point... The reason for me buying winters originally was being all over the country with work, and getting caught out in unexpected snow more than a few times - as well as driving on icy roads a lot.

Thanks for that info on the "new old stock" tyres. I might give that a go. There's still plenty of life left in the winter fronts, so it seems a travesty to have to throw them away once the rears are finished.
