I particularly like the way the idrive controller looks like an ashtray on a cheap side table.

Why does it have to be so very ugly?
Do Chinese people think that is swoonsomely attractive?

Another styling mess. Such a shame when the performance, range, charging speed and interior space (X7 space in X5 footprint) are all so good.

Why have BMW started painting their concept cars in that awful colour, the blue clashes hideously with it too.

BMW's styling department and whoever signs it off really aught to take a very long break from work.

That's a rather polite way of describing it. I'm all for disabled people having great career opportunities, but the whole design department of BMW being blind is maybe taking equal opportunities a bit too far.

Definite working mens club vibes there. All it needs is a few pint glass ring stains, some pool chalk and half a pack of smokes.

The supposed range makes it "very interesting" but the styling, particularly the front....... The grille looks like a giant sticker and not a "proper" dummy grille at all, so why do it?
EDIT: And having had a look at the Auto Express article, it appears to come with a variation of the Austin Allegro quartic steering wheel

EDIT: And having had a look at the Auto Express article, it appears to come with a variation of the Austin Allegro quartic steering wheel. You're right. But then this car is about as desirable as an Austin Allegro. In fact, I reckon an Allegro was better looking.

Thing is, in the overall scheme of things, a second front bumper moulding to European tastes would add very little to the overall cost of developing a new car. So if China is such an important market but has "special taste", why aren't 2 different mouldings developed to better suit the requirements in different markets?

When both American and European buyers are saying the same I think the investment would more than pay for itself.

Unfortunately yes, judging by the comments I've seen on the new M3/M4. What's the reason they are giving? I mean I could run an argument that the front of the iX looks a bit like an angry Kim Jong-un rendered as a Transformer....but I really don't see why that would appeal any more in China than it does in the UK!!

Since a fairly homogenous group of people on a closed internet forum rarely agree on what looks good and what doesn't I'm surprised anyone needs to ask why 1.4 billion people living 5000 miles away, with vastly different cultural values and experiences might have a different opinion on a car design? It's like saying why do the Chinese persist with chopsticks when we have forks? From my dim and distant international marketing days even I can remember that the biggest mistake you can make is to assume that every other culture thinks like you do.

Unfortunately yes, judging by the comments I've seen on the new M3/M4. What's the reason they are giving? I'd imagine together with a whole host of reasons the main one is that China doesn't have historic view of what a BMW looks like that the west does. The BMW of the average buyers youth simply didn't exist as the market is so new.

Unfortunately yes, judging by the comments I've seen on the new M3/M4. What's the reason they are giving? Mostly, it looks "imposing", "aggressive", "in-your-face", those kinds of things. There are of course folks who don't like it too but the general sentiment have been more positive than negative. I suppose it's because cars in China are more of a status symbol than anywhere else in the world. If you can buy a car in China it is a pretty big deal and you'll want to shout about it, as loudly as you can.

Once again we're far too polite on here. That looks fucking horrible and there's no other way of saying it. Having said that most pre-war cars look horrible to me and without them we'd never have had iconic cars like DB5s, E-Types, GTO Ferraris, Maseratis etc. So it's just another step on the road to the next design language which we, or the next generation or two of car lovers, will find more acceptable. .......China doesn't have historic views of what a BMW looks like that the west does. The BMW of the average buyers youth simply didn't exist as the market is so new. This is very likely. There is are housing estates near where I now live that I would never contemplate living on no matter how nice, spacious or efficient the houses are. One is built on the old sewage works (which were sewage works when I grew up) and one is built on the site of the "mental hospitals" (which were still "mental hospitals" full of those less fortunate / able than the rest of us when I grew up) but to incomers they're just nice new houses. "BMWs don't look like that" and "When I grew up this was all fields" springs readily to mind. That iX is still fucking horrible though.
