Having got rid of the GT4 about this time last year and having bought the XC90 as the family bus I’ve been all over the place in the classifieds and looking at everything from Alfa Giulia QVs to Alpine A110s, M3 comps, M2 comps. The Focus ST I’ve had for a couple of years that I ran alongside the GT4. It was initially bought as a stop gap but has done sterling service and for the money, probably worth about 8 grand, I’d struggle to think of something better. I was 100% going for the Alfa Giulia at the start of the year and actually had lined up a car in Guernsey to buy but good old COVID got in the way and put a stop to that along with any other car buying. Now of course, my daily commute is no more and I’m in the office tops only 2 days a week, therefore can look at cars that are impractical or a little older as it’ll only bring doing about 5000 miles a year. What I do want is a fast, good looking, practical sports car with a manual gearbox and try as I might to find something a little different there really is only one option. Hopefully the images work but if they don’t it’s a 997 C2S 2010 with 50000 miles. Picked up in the pissing rain so not had much chance to stretch its legs. But looks great drives well and nice to be in something rwd.

I'm not really a fan of 911s but that looks nice. Even the black wheels suit it.

In all honesty I can’t stand black wheels usually but they really suit the car.

The polished rim edge helps enormously.

The polished rim edge helps enormously. Exactly. I don't think I could ever buy (for me) a car with all black wheels. I did however buy a Mini with all black wheels for my daughter because those were the wheels she wanted. I think the bigger the car the worse all black wheels look. EDIT: Apologies Ed for not commenting on the car: that looks really nice and clean and unworn internally. I thought it was a 996 at first from the photo from the front. Despite those that say a 911 just looks the same from one generation to the next, there is quite a significant difference between the 997 and the current 992 which looks significantly bigger and broader - not necessarily a good thing for A and B road fun.

Looks good, I quite like the colour combination. An appropriately viral registration plate too!

2010s are gen2's ? can't remember.Anyway they are cracking cars ,I only had mine for 4 or 5 months as the M6 arrived about 4 months before it should have, and I should have kept the 997 and flipped the m6 but hindsight is wonderful.
anyway enjoy it ,arguably outside of gt models its the last proper 911 sportscar as the 991 became more gran tourish.

The polished rim edge helps enormously. Agree that the polished rims work well as you see them, rather than the black wheels, as it were. Good looking buy there Ed. Looks like your mid life crisis is complete then? Big bus for family duties, sports car for you.

Looks really good Ed! Also agree on the silver rims, our Boxster had the same and it’s so much better than an all black wheel.

Oh very nice. I am entirely jealous. Those are absolutely hands-down my favourite alloys on a 997 (although I'd prefer them all silver).
I want one too!!!

I agree - very nice. That's a 911 to keep and enjoy for a long time. Everything you would realistically need for road and occasional track use. It has the right seats too, the sports seats rather than the standard ones which have a lot less support. Enjoy it to the full and I wish you many happy miles.

Well the first 2 significant costs are in. The tax for the year is £530 which I wasn’t prepared for and I’ve decided to upgrade the in car entertainment for an aftermarket Pioneer unit to give Apple Car Play, full Bluetooth and DAB. This is about £760 fitted but integrates with the steering wheel controls and Bose. I don’t need much in the way of luxury in my cars but do love my tunes.

Terrible. What manner of shit have you bought there? Awful colour; wheels are dire and the interior looks like the inside of a coal bunker on a dark night.
Sorry: too much positivity in this thread.
Great car and I'm another one that is a fan of those wheels only because of the rim being silver.

The only downside of a 10 year old car is the dated infotainment system so that's a sensible upgrade. Probably not an issue in a weekend toy but I'd be a bit put out by only having FM radio in a daily driver.

That looks lovely.
I'm also a fan of decent tunes so am totally with you spending the money on an aftermarket system. I have a Pioneer Mechless system with Spotify compatible Bluetooth and Dab along with subwoofer in the Defender!

Does the new Pioneer system sit in the centre consul and replace the existing unit? Is it a DIY job or a specialist?

I'll need to take a photo of the head unit in my Toyota - it's mostly in Japanese (for some reason a few of the buttons are in English). At least, courtesy of Google Translate, we found out how to play CDs....

Does the new Pioneer system sit in the centre consul and replace the existing unit? Is it a DIY job or a specialist? It does sit in the centre consul and is quite a neat install. I’m getting a specialist to install it as it’s more complicated then a plug and play. It will need the steering wheel wiring changes, a dab aerial installing, the Bose amplifier to be made compatible and upgrade the input terminals in the armrest. No doubt Mark could put it together in his sleep but I’d set fire to the car before I even touched the first wire.

Was about to buy it then I noticed I’d have to have that black box on the windscreen Ffs Surely they could have found a way to have the aerial behind the dash somewhere. It's not as if you need a clean line of sight to receive a radio signal.

DAB mobile reception is patchy. The signal and bandwidth are nowhere near as strong and large as FM so it needs a decent antenna. You don't have to have a glass mount antenna - there are all sorts of options. I tried a splitter that used the existing FM antenna and it was garbage so upgraded to a glass mount external antenna. It's a Land Rover, so bits stuck onto it don't look out of place. www.dabonwheels.co.uk/product-category/dab-car-aerials/You can get a discreet sharkfin roof mount, for example.

I hope you are enjoying it, Ed, and that some dry weather soon brings dry roads so you can stretch its legs. Any ideas on where to go for an alignment yet?

First opportunity to drive the car as it’s creators intended tonight and think I should gel with it quite nicely. Just driving around at normal speeds there really isn’t a great deal of feedback from the steering and the control weights are a little light for my liking especially compared to the GT4.
However, once you get on it the car comes alive. It’s a complicated beast that will take a while to master, under steer on corner entry switching to progressive oversteer on exit. The power gets down onto a slippery road given the rear engined package but it does feel quite loose. The tyres are P zeros which I’ve never been a great fan of and I remember my old white cayman being transformed by switching to PS4S all round so maybe something to upgrade in the future. I’m not looking to bin off the current tyres as the last owner put new P zeros on less then 1000 miles ago. Heel and toe is an absolute piece of piss to get right on every shift as well which is a nice surprise. 911’s are quite different to most other cars and so i just need to dial back in. It does few very old school, closer to my old 993 in how it goes rather than the 991.

Lovely looking car, and a great choice, enjoy!
FWIW I have had 4 sets of tyres on my XFR's - including the OEM fit P Zeroes and a later set from Micheldever tyres - the latter set are the best I have run on the the car, really really good in all conditions. I can't compare to the PS4's as I've not used them, but my rears need swapping out and I'll happily fit another pair (probably the brand new ones that have just been updated) when the summer wheels go back on in the spring. My car is all about the rear grip and I'm pleased I'll be in a situation where I have brand new rubber in spring, the current ones have about 3mm left and while they got a tad exciting when the temperatures drooped into low single figures a few weeks back, they are still OK in all but standing water.
The OEM fit P Zeroes were lethal - the fronts were decent, but the rears (also on about 3mm) just wanted to kill me all the time even in the dry, in a way the later (supposedly identical) set did not. They were 4 years old, but still, it was some difference... I do notice powerful heavy cars kill tyres before they are at the legal limit, presumably they go through too many heat cycles, as I had much the same with the Dunlops....
