I see that the BBC website says that the reason for the crash has not yet been determined. If anyone has seen the video, it's pretty easy - he lost it on the right hander before the sharp left hand turn where he left the road. Too much speed in the right hander, making braking difficult if not impossible and then the inevitable crash (no doubt helped by the momentum of 2 tonnes of battery).

Agreed, like many "accidents" it happened the turn before he went off. Driving beyond his abilities imho.

What was he driving?

I'd imagine driving a car with two tonnes of battery makes it handle somewhat differently to what you'd be used to!

No chance of him ever making that corner was there

No chance of him ever making that corner in that underdeveloped piece of shite was there FYP. Fair enough he'd lost it previously but the car was pretty unforgiving after that.

Easy to suggest it was poor driving on his part but this is still a concept so it could well be that it needs more work on the brakes or handling. It's probably not worth speculating until they investigate the real reasons. Not that it will help him escape some significant piss taking from Clarkson and May on The Grand Tour.

Evo weren't exactly complimentary about it's handling when they tested it last year. There does seem to be a whole load of crap about these new electric car manufacturers and their abilities to engineer the whole vehicle. A lot of them seem to be able get the battery/motor bit right and then seem to get a free pass on the rest of the bits that actually make up a decent car.
And TG/GT do seem to, shall we say, make somewhat more of Hammond's driving abilities than he actually has.

Looks fairly innocuous and I'm betting that if he'd done the same in most of the established exotica he'd have managed the same result - I expect they're all fairly unforgiving once they let go. Unless you're Queef of course.

I think he's small enough to fit in some of the cars that JC and JM can't get their real-ale guts behind the wheel of.

All the handling prowess and Driving god abilities can not overcome the laws of physics.

I'd imagine driving a car with two tonnes of battery makes it handle somewhat differently to what you'd be used to! And also catch fire very easily it seems. I can't imagine an ICE supercar bursting into flames after that?

No chance of him ever making that corner was there I don't think he saw it. Either that or he totally misread which way the road was leading.

Too fast for the car on that part of road, once he arrived at the previous corner too quickly, mass and physics took over. Apparently even the i8 has issues of braking versus regen.

I wonder if this could also be a downside of the instant, quiet power of an electric supercar - presumably there is significantly less noise to alert you that you're going so fast, no howling V8 or V12 during the acceleration stage?
Mrs Tim's only comment was that in light of his previous accident he must be a selfish man, for the effect on his family.

Mrs Tim's only comment was that in light of his previous accident he must be a selfish man, for the effect on his family. That's a bit unfair: his job is to drive cars fast and that involves risks which I'm sure his family understand. That it's a job he loves more so. Mick Doohan very nearly lost a leg in a very bad accident at Assen in 1992. He was back racing again and won the world 500cc championship (aka motoGP in the modern parlance) five times in a row from 1994 and in 1999 broke his leg badly again. It goes with the job. Mick's son Jack is now in a kart on the European circuit.

Looks to me as if he was on the wrong line through the right hander before the left. Didn't give himself any real chance of making the left in the absence of heavy braking.
