Now they've been officially released, thought it merited its own thread: www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/new-bmw-m3-and-m4-officially-revealed/43117Still not loving either of them. Completely fugly head-on and it's not just the WTF grilles either. The lower bumper intakes are just a mess and the squared-off dents in the bonnet masquerading as intakes are 100% Halfords. If you held a gun to my head, then I think the M3 looks better than the M4 (in contrast to the outgoing generation where the M4 looked better than the M3, which was too cartoonish). There's too much rear haunch on the new 4-series coupe and you wouldn't think it possible that an M4 could looked under-wheeled, but BMW have managed it - from some angles the M4 looks all wrong around the rear wheel-arch to me. And just when you were digesting the decision to make soft neon yellow the signature hue for the M4, they show you a picture of the inside combining said lurid hue with smurf blue. I didn't know coronavirus could affect cause colour-blindness but they seem to be suffering from it in Munich. As for the green. Well, I reserve judgement until I see it in the metal, but it's a slightly odd shade as well. Not dark enough to hide the "styling" (a word used advisedly). All of which means I'm really not sure I give two hoots whether they drive well or not.

Some of the details jar a little, but broadly they both look okay to me. Beauties they are not, but in the right colour (ie neither of those) I could live with the styling.

It looks like they've gone out of their way to make every single detail look like an after-market addition. Terrible looking car.

Is there a new styling disaster with us - known as "detailing to death"? Every panel has weird add-ons that might shave 0.00001 off at the 'Ring, or are there to look like it might shave 0.0001 off at the 'Ring.

It's on the configurator now. £81k for a reasonable spec but without the carbon pack/seats. If you want those then go for the Ultimate pack as it saves just under £2k (£86K).
No thanks.

If Alpina had any sense they'd seize this opportunity to produce a M-car rival but with more restrained styling. Mind you, even if they do that, they'll ruin it by adding the crap stripes and 70s wheels.

Similar price to the new M3 when you spec one to a similar level and you can have it without the stripes (thankfully) and spec the badge on the lower part of the front bumper in gloss black to make it less obvious. Nothing you can do about the old fashioned wheels, but the 20s aren't too bad.

I had a quick play on the configurator and got to £79,640. It looks like most things you'd expect are included and I think the most expensive option I picked was the laserlights. I couldn't make my mind up on the interior though so stuck with the basic black leather. I avoided the carbon pack and ceramic brakes.

Apparently it weighs 1730kg - a whopping 120kg more than the old one. That would put me off more than the looks.

You'd think it'd be lighter with that huge hole in the front!

The exhausts can be tastefully upgraded At this one can only point and laugh helplessly at the sheer comedy awfulness of it. Come back Lexus and Ferrari California...all is forgiven...

That works. My computer must have been caching an old version.
Nope. Don't like that. Not even in black. And I see a sunroof is not on the options list, which just seals it.
Not on my shopping list.

Its a shame that the sound coming from those tailpipes is still disappointing. At least on that video, it sounds like its predecessor and the S55. Soon to be shrieking and farting down your high street soon...
The M3 Saloon is a strange one for BMW. With the last two generations, the LCI has been launched within a year of the pre-LCI being launched. So unless you're desperate to be BMW's Guinea Pig, you may as well wait until next year and wait for the LCI version, or early 2022 at the latest. Who knows, maybe that mouth will miraculously be revised with the LCI version....
I wish they would offer something like the F80 CS wheels for the G80. If they fixed the grille and the wheels, it would look a lot better.

Maybe they did away with it because the car is super heavy already?!

I'm sure I read that the full fat 4wd version is going to weigh over 1800kgs?

Front end aside, the M4 side profile is terribly ungainly.
Let’s face it: M4s are largely driven by the kind of person that I would cross the road to avoid. The “styling” is therefore no longer there to make high mileage reps aspire to it: it’s there to make younger owners spunk 25% of their take home pay on whilst they’re still living mortgage free with mum and dad.
The E36 M3 was inflicted with what looked like aftermarket bits from a 90s German car supermarket that catered for Manta owners and how many of them do you see cherished by collectors? This one will be the same.

At least that one looks like the person who designed the grille had seen the rest of the car, though.

The more I look at these the more I want one in M3 flavour Mind you, I liked the Alfa SZ when it first came out so maybe I've had a long-standing eyesight condition?

They do look well equipped as standard. You can even have them in a nice metallic blue. The only options I'd consider are the carbon seats and brakes, which are probably overkill unless they bring a weight reduction.
But I'd rather have an M2.
