Well I am sorry to have to report that I cannot class this as a "non-breakdown", although I wa at home when it happened. I moved the Shogun earlier and filled it up with stuff to go to the tip. Got in to go and after two turns of the starter, complete silence and zilch happened. I've recharged the battery and tried jumping it off another vehicle but it is utterly deceased. So I don't think it can be the battery as it stopped turning over so abruptly and everything else electrical works fine. I checked all the fuses I could get at and they all seemed fine too. Maybe the starter solenoid or even the starter motor?
Our usual mechanic is coming out later tonight to see what it might be.

Have you checked the leads to the starter motor?
I had issues with this years ago on a Montego. Usually happened in the dark but just required the lead to be pushed back on, it was a spade connector.
EDIT My brother in law has a problem with his 530d - it had been fine but when he went back to it after a walk there was no response. It seems likely it is the earth strap from the gearbox that is causing this. It jump started fine but when I took 1 jump lead off the car died. Got it started ok from a jumper pack from a callout but the same problem happened again a few days later except this time the car locked itself (fortunately with the keys outside the car).

Yes, it was starter motor leads. It is now fixed! Mechanic with hands like ET managed to take the main lead off the starter motor one handed (not enough space to get both hands in there), clean the connector, clean the contacts, reassemble and voila. Fired straight away. Bigger wonder is why the f would you build an off-roader with the starter motor at the bottom the the engine with no waterproof cover over the contacts so that, over time, they will obviously corrode. Oh yes, cost saving....

The DAF did exactly the same a while ago. Access was much easier with a tilt cab.
