Further to discussion on PHEVs, Company car tax on PHEVs and the general “use electric in a city” point, this is one of my most common journeys. Pall Mall to home. The last bit “home” is reasonable but this probably makes the case for a 530e Touring. I reckon the round trip (28 miles) At 16mpg is about five times the fuel cost of an electric car that does 110kph on electric only (apparently) - a speed I’d not generally see.

You’re using man maths all wrong! It’s supposed to work the other way, so something along the lines of X times 28 miles journeys means a cost of £Y at 16mpg. So whilst five times the cost of electric, it is much less than the additional depreciation on a new 530e. Then when you’re at that point and discounted the eco car, you can justify something that does even less than 16mpg on that type of journey because the incremental cost is worth it for whatever other benefits there are! As you’re feeling all eco.... With those journey stats, it doesn’t make sense to be lugging a petrol engine around for the odd occasion you need the range. Why not get an electric something as a second car to cover all the short journeys and keep the B5 for the odd occasion you need to go further and don’t want to risk it?

I'm sure the RACs lovely but would it not be more sensible to join a Gym near home and keep the Alpina?

I use the B5 seldom enough, never mind if its a car for special occasions. There are other man-maths reasons: selling the B5 and leasing the 530e through the business being one (I've already done the forms) and realising the current theoretical value of the B5 as hard cash another. I'm sure I'd use a 530e more meaning that the MINI would be parked more than it is now. No idea what I'd do with a lump of cash as I don't need anything - retirement planning via depreciation-proof classic cars looms then.

I use the country club gym too, which is less than 5 miles away but Pall Mall has other benefits: such as a hot-desk office environment which I used this morning plus the cost of the c-charge and the fact that parking is free when I leave before 0830 (which I tend to - today being different) means the cost of any additional gym is a no-point exercise [sic]

It's obviously the right thing to do. We all do it.

What is the beast worth now?? (he says idly, having just come into a small lump sum himself post house sale)...

What is the beast worth now?? (he says idly, having just come into a small lump sum himself post house sale)... There’s a RHD face lift on AT for £39k. It’s laughably priced and is missing loads of spec the Gorilla has. On AutoScout24 there are 6 in the same model year as mine with the cheapest €35k, again with less spec.

Time to revisit this thread. This week I am looking at cleaning the Gorilla thoroughly and advertising it. I've driven 5 miles in it since August 23rd and as I said, I own it outright so it's a lump of cash if I sell it. BMW Finance accepted me for a lease so all I need to do is wait for the 530e Touring to be released: I've specced it from the brochure and there are three things that I could do in Germany that BMW UK don't allow: Papel Maser inserts (I can accept the open pore ash instead); the BMW UK insistence on a black grille with the Adaptive suspension(!) and the BMW UK insistence on gangster glass from the B-pillar also with Adaptive option (whereas I'd prefer normal glass and the pull up blinds which again the UK doesn't offer).
One other PHEV benefit for me is that they're exempt from the Congestion Charge. If I use pre-booking for car parking for the few days I now go into London it will cost me less than a daily Oyster, even with £2 of car-charging overnight which is just insane!

I bet there aren't many people who would order Papel Maser. What's the full spec that you've gone for?

Do you still have the bikes? 250 2-stroke for fun only. I'm currently talking to a a guy in wallington about looking after it mechanically (carbs need a re-jet / clean out) and cosmetically. If I have to do more commuting a used CBR600 would be the most likely culprit as they're just less likely to get nicked that a BMW S1000RR.

Pappel Maser?
In it's grey/black form it appears identical to the 'wood' bits on my Toyota.....

I bet there aren't many people who would order Papel Maser. What's the full spec that you've gone for? - 530e MSport Touring
- Aventurine Red
- Nappa - Mocha. (Not enamoured with the colours of the merino for the additional price.)
- Open pore ash inserts
- Instrument panel in leather
- M Sport Pro Pack - 19" 845M as the 530e would get 18s. I also need a break from 20"s. I only want this for the adaptive suspension but it comes with the other shite like black grille and rear windows. In Germany you can spec just the adaptive suspension. As it says at the bottom of my posts: freedom from choice.....
- Technology Pack (still debating on the plus pack - the Gorilla has all those bits and I can't remember using them more than once - an emergency stop in traffic. I'll see what the effect is on the lease)
- Visibility pack
- Parking assistant plus (which I won't need if I get the Tech plus pack as it's included)
It's interesting watching the Autogefuehl test. Firstly he reckons the cloth seats are best (again, available in Germany as the base spec) for breathability and heat / cold comfort, which my step-dad always agreed with and had cloth in all his Benzes, but it's his opinions on the Sensatec that are really eye-opening to an old fart like me. It's not just the improved quality he goes on about but the ethics of it being recycled /recyclable and not stripped off of an animal, which is quite a common Germanic anti- bonzen view point. I'd actually like cloth seats but I don't think it would ever be sold to anyone ever as a used car in the UK.

Nice spec. Agree that Merino choices aren't great and it's a lot more money for slightly softer leather and a lower dash in leather rather than padded pleather (what you get with the Nappa dash). Full Merino isn't the same on the 5 as the 7 either, so it doesn't extend down the doors any further than the Nappa option. The benefit of Tech Plus is the latest voodoo cruise, which keeps you in lane......which is terrible at speed (imo having it on mine and both X5 and 7 loan cars), but very good in traffic as a light touch on the wheel is all you need to do as it drives itself. The speed limit display is also well worth having and both the cross traffic warning and the collision prevention tech might never be needed but could well save you at some point. I'd definitely go for the Tech Plus Pack.

Yes: I initially dismissed Tech Plus out of hand but I've since oo-ed and err-ed about it as it was only when I read the inclusions in the brochure that I realised I have the earlier version of it on the Gorilla. I've still got until November, at least, apparently.
