Was it ever a factory option on that model? I've only ever seen them with the large star on the grille but maybe that's because most UK buyers were opting for AMG line cars.

The German spec has a classic style grille similar to the current S Class, with a proper star above, but it is an easy job to remove the flat disc badge on UK cars and fit a genuine Mercedes star in its place. |

The problem is not the star you’ve added as to me that’s one of the true delights of piloting a Mercedes but the rather horrid standard grille with the big badge that merc put on in the first place. Agreed that Mercedes should go back to the sclass grille

There is a flat round bade which pops out from the back, takes 5mins to swap over if that.

I’m not wild about the star above star in principle but am too fond of the gunsight effect to let that bother me.

Not overly clear, but it seems obvious to me that the small and very unnecessary badge on the bonnet is there purely for the fact that this is a very popular mod. Or it’s there because in some markets they still have a 3 pointed start on the bonnet, so they make them all the same and use a badge to plug the hole.... |

I think it really has to be one or the other. I think both is a bit of an overkill, personally. But it's your car, that's the whole point. So enjoy.
If I had the choice, I'd choose the S class grille and the star on the bonnet.
