One hell of a bang in the port which destroyed a warehouse and half a massive grain storage facility.
That is what 3,000 metric tons of ammonium nitrate does when it is badly stored.
I really wish people would learn the lesson, not exactly news.
Before the big bang.

It looks like the grain storage facility probably shielded a large part of the city. Apparently they forgot about the ammonium nitrate being stored there.

That's one "f*****************************k" moment.
I didn't see this until the 10pm news last night. I'd heard about it on the radio in the car earlier, but that hadn't given a sense of the sheer magnitude.
Then watching it on the news, I saw the initial large cloud of smoke and was just sitting there with my mother thinking "yes, well, that's quite big, but..." when the real explosion happened and that is a properly shocking moment the first time you see it.

Indeed. The visible shock wave from that huge explosion just takes the breath away. The whole place is just a scene of utter devastation afterwards.

^ Personally I find that in very poor taste. This shows the devastation - the entire warehouse that was the source of the explosion has gone along with the ground underneath it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-53680772Pretty sobering. As well as the significant death toll, it's believed that the number made homeless may run into the hundreds of thousands

Judging by the distance from the warehouse when this video was filmed, this guy is one of the brown bread.
Can you guys SEE the link I posted?

The size of the crater is enormous, given that it was solid ground before the explosion and now it is sea again.

Apparently paint thinners stored right next to the Ammonium Nitrate too. It MUST have been just one of those things? ?

It's usual to blame a welder.. Vapourised in an instant so no longer able to defend himself - the easiest kind of scapegoat

It is shocking viewing. The Azeri/Armenian tiff/conflict is bad but that one big bang in Beirut knocked that into the corner. How more were not killed is indeed good fortune.

Seeing the ship on the bank that was put there by the explosion gives it perspective. Devastating.

As daft as it may sound, they were 'fortunate' that that massive concrete structure was there.

Doubly firtunate in that it contained grain which I think soaked up some of the blast.

Incredible devastation. And not in the news at all now.
