Sadly it seems that they have become a bit of a niche player and with a dramatic fall in the sales of new cars in the UK (and probably Europe as a whole) over the last few months, I suppose that this is no real surprise

The only thing they sold that interested me recently would be the L200 and I would only choose that over a Navara/Izuzu due to being able to have 4x4 high range with open diff or diff locked meaning it can tow in the wet without having the usual wind up.

You've just hit on one of my anger buttons in SUV / pick up reviews. Nobody ever talks about the AWD system. The fact that you can't run a Navara / Hilux etc or a lot of SUV's in AWD on dry tarmac to tow without knackering your tyres is never said. Whereas, as you say, the L200 (and the Shogun) have "proper" AWD systems that allow that. Mind you, now that Mitsubishi no longer make the Shogun, I'm not sure that there is anything in the range that interests me. The local dealer keeps calling trying to persuade me to change it for a Shogun Sport (basically an L200 with an SUV body on). I keep politely refusing.

They haven't been of any interest to most people since the Evo got axed, not that it ever floated my canoe.
I couldn't even tell you where my nearest dealer is. There used to be one in Melksham that also did Alfas but it closed years ago.

One of the biggest Mitsubishi dealers in the country is not far from here and they do lots of trade with the local farmers and country folk. Not sure what they will do now.

My old employer took on a Mitsubishi franchise in 2014 and seemed to be doing a lot of trade into Perthshire. The cars weren't interesting but the 4x4s sold a lot.
Weirdly there's another franchise within about 10 miles. I never understood that given the small number across the UK.

No doubt the fluctuations of the yen haven't helped, but like Simon suggests, the loss of the Evo and Ralliart meant that Mitsubishi lost their halo product. In America, the Eclipse was popular with younger buyers, but they never replaced it. Subaru decided to stop bringing sporting Impreza's to Europe, the brand lost visibility since then. Lets be honest, the dreary designs and tacky interiors isn't what sold them.

They seem to have put nearly all their eggs in the crossover basket, but all of those eggs are dull beige ones with no flavour.

I suspect that the only vehicle that really sells for them is the L200 pickup and that may result in a few extra sales. To keep some presence in the market they should do what Ssangyong have done locally - appoint a tractor and farm machinery dealer as their dealer.

That would work very well, but it also depends on the area. Our two nearest dealers are Mitsubishi and Subaru and all the villages around here are knee deep in them.

As I've nowt else to do I looked up the dealers. Bath or Salisbury. Bath is probably the closest of the two.

I remember when Colt Cars (Mitsubishi) would win The Which reliability award every year without exception.

I remember when Colt Cars (Mitsubishi) would win The Which reliability award every year without exception. Which made it even more surprising that my Galant required seven replacement auto transmissions in 12 months. A shame, because otherwise it was a decent car.

Seven! I bet you hardly saw the thing it was in the shop so often! Exactly! Buy a Galant and spend half your time driving a Carisma* courtesy car. * The most ironic car name ever.

I've just given someone £100 for their 2003, 168k miles Carisma! TBH I'm surprised they have only just pulled out of Europe, they've been a bit player for many years, Subaru next?!

I suspect they will move towards getting more Chinese models such as those from Great Wall (their sub brand Haval is apparently one of the biggest sellers of SUVs and crossovers on the planet) or Ssangyong but it depends whether their customers will accept that otherwise maybe they'll need to look at more known brands such as Isuzu. I've seen a lot of their pick ups about around this way so they must sell.

That would make sense. Our local Subaru dealer also stocks Ssangyong and Isuzu.

Isuzu, Daihatsu, Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru..... I wonder if the Japanese manufacturers have lost the plot in Europe, or just decided that we don't warrant enough investment for the return on sales

That would make sense. Our local Subaru dealer also stocks Ssangyong and Isuzu. Don't forget MG too. The garage I was at did Subaru, SsangYong, Great Wall and MG then ditched Great Wall (they only did the pickup and there were supply issues in 2013/14) and took on Mitsubishi.
