Very good. At least I know it wouldnt've been thrashed by some 25 year old who got it on a PCP, rather a 40 something (plus Lindsay)! One of our friends - a 61 year old GP - has one in Martin spec but last time I spoke to him it had done 1,500 miles in total. I doubt he's thrashed that at all. Such low mileage can't be all that good for it and ours has got better as the mileage has increased. He's got a 2014 Merc 500SL that has about 6k miles on it!

Always happy to help! If you hang on about a year you could have one that is in the same colour with the same wheels as mine and you'll know that its been well looked after! Very good. You've got to keep in with him and make it quite clear that you would like first call on making him an offer if he is thinking of selling either of those cars.

If Iwas looking at Golf Rs it wouldn't be the 7.5 because I'd want a 3 door one. When VW decided they were going to consign the 3 door to the bin they pruned the options list on it to barely anything. This lowered sales by forcing buyers who wanted a few toys to pick the more door and gave them the justification they sought.
Plus, I want a silver one!

I don't think I could afford his prices. Anyway I'd prefer either his 39k mile 2001 500SL, which is some sort of limited edition one, or the immaculate low-mileage 1989 (I think) 500SEC. I'm not sure his wife's 2003 Micra is in the same league though Apart from the CR-V that's the only one I've been in while moving.

I don't think I could afford his prices. They are only worth what they are worth and age unfortunately drains away the value much faster than low mileage tops it up (unless they hit cult or classic status in which case all sense goes out the window) A 500 SEL has always been on my serious want list.

I've seen the new Golf on the road (not the R) but it is much better in the flesh than in the photos. I think we will get very used to the Golf R in its new form and it isn't offensive like some other German makes recently. I'm not sure about the touch screen though - they need to be knocked on the head ASAP

I've seen a few new Golfs now including one at night with the full width front light glowing - a feature shared with the Mercedes electric SUV I saw recently.

I prefer it to the GTi and I guess they still want them to be a sales success that they can knock out on lease for £400 a month so couldn't shift it further upmarket as an AMG 45 rival.

It is the best looking MK8, but I still prefer the 7.5. It's not bad enough to put me off and based on the new GTI reviews and the work they've done on the drivetrain/chassis, it sounds like it will be even better to drive. So as long as they haven't ruined it's ability to be comfortable then it's a thumbs up from me, but I'm not excited enough (by anything, not just the new R) to think about changing ours at the moment.
Based on the GTI pricing, my spec would be £45-46k (Just over £40k net when normal discounting starts) which is a lot for a Golf even with the decent level of FG it would have (Voodoo lights & cruise, panoramic roof, leather, memory, heated/ventilated seats, keyless entry, loads of safety tech etc).

I like it,it's a consideration to replace the 335 when that time arrives.

Looks smart enough - press car in attractive colour shock - and has a sort of point and squirt appeal I suppose. But the GTi (or Focus or Civic if you're that way inclined) would be lighter on its feet, more interactive with a manual box, and offer a similar breadth of ability for considerably less outlay.

I was behind a new Golf for a while on the motorway on Sunday. Thought it was dreary in the extreme - automotive white goods for the terminally unimaginative. In the past Golfs have at least looked quite smart with crisp lines and a certain desirability. My back catalogue of cars owned stretches to no less than seven Golfs, so in principle they appeal to me. However, this one, in black, just looked very "meh" - a rather amorphous shape with wheels that seemed lost and an absence of any confidence to the design details. A bit shit really.

It makes the Mk 7.5 (?) look even more attractive.

I watched the Frank Stephenson review of the BMW 4 series design and he commented that a lot of the problem there is that design cues are being dissolved and replaced with more generic features shared with a lot of other cars resulting in quite a generic cars-scape. I think a lot of European manufacturers are a bit lost at the moment, they either produce more of the same or rely on retro. Land Rover have a strong and confident aesthetic and I think Nissan and a few of the Far Eastern brands do too but the rest are a bit of a mess.

I still can't get my head around the cost in 'martin spec', as even with a 14% discount it's over £45k, although when you spec an A35 or S3 to the same level it's about the same and based on what I've seen/read so far it does look like a step forward from the MK7 in terms of performance and handling. But the interior is a mixed bag and it sounds like it doesn't ride as well. It has proper big car FG though, voodoo headlights and cruise as standard along with a lot of other things and on the options list are Nappa ventilated seats, HUD etc.
Quite a long review, but if you skip a bit you'll get a decent idea. Doesn't sound too bad inside if you ignore the pops/bangs from the optional exhaust and it's pretty quick, the same reviewer timed it using a VBox on a damp road with winter tyres and it did 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds. It might change ALFs views on 4WD as well, because it makes it feel RWD, but you need the performance pack for that.
