With the X range I can kind of understand it, customers want that sort of thing with an X5 and X7. I just saw a 7-Series today, and it just looked totally and utterly ridiculous. On a 4-Series, it looks beyond a joke. It doesn't work on non-SUV's.

I had an X7 50d pull out of a side junction today without looking. I kind of thought he was gonna do that. Twattish-looking car, twattish driver. Very well suited to each other!

If its awesome to drive I could well ignore the nose. However M division can be a little hit and miss so who know what we'll get. Competition badged cars are also a head scratcher now. They used to add the badge when the original got a bit of a slating so added some tasty bits to the car and hey presto, like the M2 and M3/4 but it now seems a spec rather then mechanical upgrade and launched on day one. Is this the case? The competition pack is almost now something that you have to factor into the price because if you don't tick the option box then come the day when you want to sell, most buyers will only be looking at cars that have it. Non competition pack cars are seen as the inferior choice.

I honestly think there's some sort of $1 dollar bet like in trading places, to see if they can destroy the brand in as quick a time as possible. Its the only explanation for the 2 series GC, the bland 1, the X4,X6 and X7. The 4 series grille, the 6 GT, the nose on 7 series and less said about the 8 the better.

I totally agree - BMW's used to be good looking cars with great dynamics and now they look mostly bland or downright ugly. Even if they are a great driving experience most people won't venture into a showroom if the looks put them off.

Well I did venture into a BMW showroom and buy one of the first M135is, which had a face that only a mother could love. But I liked everything else about it and as a RWD straight six-powered manual-geared hatchback, it was in a field of mine. Plus looks aren't as fundamental to the hatchback proposition as they are to more elegant body styles such as coupes, roadsters and saloons.
I fear I shall not be doing the same when the time comes to replace the 440i.
To be honest, right at the moment, there's not much I fancy that ticks all the boxes and is in budget.

.......and as a RWD straight six-powered manual-geared hatchback.... A particular USP that they are rapidly losing. The new 1 looks like a Hyundai/Kia and has a very similar engine range but undoubtedly costs a lot more like for like. So presumably the only reasons for choosing the BMW are 1) cheaper finance options (maybe), 2) possibly screwed together better (although the last Kia I was in was pretty solid and made of nice materials for a hatchback) or 3) most likely for the badge.

To be honest John, the M5 is one of the only cars in the range along with the 3 series, X5, X3 and M2 that shows BMW have a hope. Not that the M2 is long for this world. Is the new 2 series RWD?

To be honest, right at the moment, there's not much I fancy that ticks all the boxes and is in budget. And here in lies the problem for most of us I think. Looking around currently, my short list is Alpine A110 - A bit impractical and the wrong gearbox Alfa Giulia QV - Depreciation and wallet bashing potential M2 Comp - Should be perfect but for some reason the prospect of ownership isn't exciting me that much Can't really justify looking at new Porsches like the Cayman GTS or GT4 due to the cost even though real cost of ownership isn't different to those above so I'm really thinking the best buy out there is something like a 10 year old 997 especially as my mileage has reduced dramatically

I believe the new 2 series is FWD or 4WD although there is some talk that the M2 will have an M5 like 4WD system which can be switched to 2WD. The 2WD option on mine comes with no traction aids so it's not really road friendly unless you know you have it all to yourself. My friend who bought an M2Comp a couple of months ago is loving it and thinks it will be a keeper. I have to say that on PS4's it has real usability and fantastic grip as well as being very quick.

I've blown a bit too much of the overall budget to be able to justify a nearly new M5 and I did kind of promise that the second car wouldn't be any bigger than a 3 series. Partly as I was thinking the next M3 might be a good option, but that's looking very unlikely.

I have really no idea.
Ideally we'd have three cars:
1. a MINI Cooper S for everyday; 2. something SUV-shaped for when the need arises (I'd quite like a Velar); and 3. some sort of sports car for fun, eg a Boxster or somesuch similar.

I wonder if BMW are doing this because the hot SUV's haven't appealed to the people they had hoped for? Its anecdotal, but I don't really see many M division X5's, X3's or X4's. Then one considers the deposit contribution that they keep offering, they are hardly flying out of showrooms. For too long people kept asking for a fast estate, and BMW kept giving people fat SUV's.
The next 2-Series is definitely RWD, its based on the CLAR platform. Which I suppose opens the possibility for 4WD versions too. It looks like a mess though. The best way I can describe the F-generation of BMW's is like this: none of them were oil paintings, but compared to the G-generation of cars.....!

My 440i is an F generation (F36) model and without dusting off the moonboots, I don’t think it’s an ugly car and neither is the corresponding generation of 3-series.

It would make more sense to substitute that for the Velour and keep the Boxster on the list, but it's a moot point anyway, as (unfortunately) Jaguar don't do fast saloons anymore. (I'm ignoring the Project 8)

I really disliked the F30 when it came out as the first ones I saw were non M-Sport versions and reminded me very much of the 1996 Mitsubishi Galant, not a car I dislike but 20 years older than the BM. Obviously I now do have an F30 but in black with the M Sport kit, big wheels and black grille it looks excellent. I'm pretty sure I won't be changing it for the latest 3 though.

SUV-wise, I like the Velour best. I didn’t but having one for four days converted me. I also like the Stelvio, which I’ve driven in 280bhp petrol form. One of those in Visconti Green would be an acceptable family bus.
And the X3 M40i appeals as effectively the mechanical bits of my car in one of BMW’s only better-looking SUVs.
