Interesting to read it will be RWD initially, then Xdrive will be available later in the model cycle. Manual option front the start. But look what grille it is going to have.....

Hope for what? Surely that's the worst outcome?

Hope for what? Surely that's the worst outcome? Hope that they don’t ruin the M3 in the same way they will the M4z

That grille is surely a certainty now even on the M3?

Maybe that shot is of the new M3 from the rear, and the new M4 from the front? We can live in hope, can't we ??

The current 3 series isn't blessed with the most attractive grille - although it's not as bad as the new 4's. However, the current 3 is very colour sensitive and given that most M3s I see are pale and it'll likely have a black grille and surround it wouldn't look great even if they avoid the 4 series comedy schnozz!

The M3 looks good....from the back! Please please, let it have the G20's grille.
I thought that BMW were only bringing Competition M cars to the UK, you can only order the M5 Comp and X5 M Comp. But it appears that the standard M3 will come to the UK with RWD.
The S58 sounds decent, but, do the prototype cars have GPF? Will America get a better sounding M3?

Is it probably safe to say that the awful grille will be grafted onto the normal 3 series at LCI time?

If the M3 is the Halo model for the 3 series why would you want to stick the 4 series gille on it, unless as Tim says, its being grafted onto the 3 series at a later date.

Sticking that god-awful obscenity of a front end on an M3 makes an Alpina even more desirable than it already was over an M3.

That's disappointing. The M3 used to have a nice, elegant grille:

There are photos circulating already of the M3 testing at the ring with the full nose on show.
Apparently BMW want to distance the M3 from the standard 3 series which is why it wears the M4 grill.
It is absolutely a step too far for me although it is probably one of those things we will get used to. However whilst it's possible to get used to ugly, it will never make it attractive. I don't see this being a success.

If its awesome to drive I could well ignore the nose. However M division can be a little hit and miss so who know what we'll get.
Competition badged cars are also a head scratcher now. They used to add the badge when the original got a bit of a slating so added some tasty bits to the car and hey presto, like the M2 and M3/4 but it now seems a spec rather then mechanical upgrade and launched on day one. Is this the case?

Is this the case? I don't think I could ignore it, not unless familiarity means it doesn't look quite as bad as it does now. If it's anything like the M8/X5M/M5 facelift, there is a standard model but BMW UK have decided to only bring in the competition version. It's not just a trim level, they do adjust (firm up!) the suspension and give it more power as well as a couple of styling changes so I think it's the same principle as before.

The interesting thing about the B3, it uses the M Division's S58. Alpina usually takes one of BMW's regular inline six and tune that. The only thing I would say, the M3 is gonna look pukka from the rear with those wheel arches. It makes the B3 look a bit weedy from the back.
I don't understand it. BMW are going to some lengths to satisfy traditional customers; manual being retained, RWD being retained...yet they seriously think that core customers want a grille like that.

There is a certain arrogance in BMW's attitude to its fans because they have been complaining about the ever increasing grill size for 4 or 5 years now and yet with every car they keep getting bigger.

Folk keep saying that it's because the virus spreaders like a big grille. That market must be huge for them to ignore everyone else in the world ie their original audience who actually made the company the success it is.
