Looks like someone's taken the latest Toyota RAV4 and made it blander.

Is this yet another sub-brand, that will have some kind of lifestyle element, distinct branding, separate showroom areas, etc, etc?

I've not fully read the ID3 review in this week's Autocar yet, but Greg Kable was raving in the bit I did read. But then he's like a French writer to French cars. I've never seen hm say any German car is shit or, frankly, a bit boring. But the headline shows how far the mainstream manufacturers have to go to catch up - calling it "VW's Tesla".
This ID4 looks like the ID3 at 120% and jacked up a bit. Which I guess is the family look for the ID range.
What puzzles me about VW having an electric sub brand, is what happens when that becomes more mainstream. Do they kill the Golf name for example, or do they then have to say that the ID3 is now a Golf? I still think they'd be much better calling the ID3 and 3-Golf of some sort and this an e-Tiguan.

Given how little effort seems to have gone into the styling of the Golf Mk8 and the fact the ID3 looks a couple of generations of the Golf further on I suspect the electric models are the ones with the long term future.

My comment was not about the car but the naming convention. I agree it is the electric models that have a longer term future. What puzzles me is are VW going to throw away the Golf name? To have to rebrand the successful ID electric range as "Golf" etc in 5 / 7 / 10 years will surely be a lot of work if they want to keep the Golf name going.

I suspect once electric cars really take off, the Golf name will be slowly phased out and left to die (kinda like Beetle). 'ID' will then be the new brand name. Interesting also that it's alphanumerics, like the premium brands.

Yes, that's got a nice catchy feel to it.

I hope they keep the names but what will the name mean to people who view a car as non essential or white goods? People who buy the badge and believe a rear drive car to be front wheel drive because "It's a hatchback and they are all front wheel drive".

The brand value of the name Golf must run into a billions - I'm not sure they would throw all that away.

With EV and autonomous cars, future buyers will only look at the number to determine what size of car they need. Things like styling and how it actually drives will become secondary.

I associate 'ID' with Citroen, but am probably in a minority with that in the 21st century.
