I see Rolls Royce engineering has had its stock downgraded to junk by S&P. So, building on a comment that we well go for the German brand regardless of the grill, how would you rate brands on the AAA system and which are junk?
Land Rover AAA+, obviously.

Land Rover AAA+, obviously.
Although, as discussed JLR is actually CCC+. However, I think you are saying which brands do we rate as having the highest brand value? In which case I agree LR is at the top of the heap with Mercedes, Ferrari and probably MINI.

I think Land Rover might have a high value but Jaguar too? I can't help thinking it's the new Rover.

It's all about perception and prejudice though isn't it?
For example in the '80s I'd say you would rate Merc highly but now they appear to churn out Astra lookalike Focus competitors that are all white (and white goods) with shirt button wheels and in addition to those they make a couple of interesting (to me) niche cars that have a decent engine. So I wouldn't rate the brand any higher than, say, Ford who do the same - if you substitute the V8 AMGs for the Mustang!
I'm 100% sure I'm an inverted snob who has some character flaw that allows them to drive an unexciting yet premium badged 2 litre diesel estate car

I would say Skoda have a strong clearly defined brand Aston did but has lost it as it chased the volume and became too samey Land Rover definitely have a strong brand despite their product being iffy at times (Jaguar seems terminal) Porsche have a strong brand BMW/Merc/Audi - all chased the volume and little different to VW/Ford now Pug/Citroen/Fiat/Vauxhall/Renault etc - despite pretensions are little different and probably worse than Kia/Hyundai

I forgot about Porsche. Yes, add that one.
I think globally Mercedes must be one of the strongest brands.

Despite having one, I think mercedes have really gone off the boil brandwise, I think too many A class have undermined the S class etc.
If I was in the market for an Uber saloon I would go Bentley rather than Merc....that's another strong Brand

Among us yes. Among the average person on the planet, I think Mercedes is still pretty strong.

Porsche Ferrari Mercedes Benz Rolls Royce (cars obviously) Range Rover (only Range Rover I’m afraid none of the other JLR stuff)
These brands are highly rated amongst non-car people which must surely be the gauge. Most of the supercar stuff like Lambo and McLaren would be classed as gaudy by most, Bentley has gone full chav, BMWs are as commonplace as VWs and Ford / Opel / Vauxhall are considered rep-fodder by most even if they’re not. Italian, French and American cars are considered local market specialities or cheap motoring by many and let’s even start on Chinese brands....

Looking at it a different way - what would be the brand be worth is if it was put up for sale tomorrow. I'm thinkig - Porsche - sports car heritage (that translates to SUV's, go figure...) Ferrari - just as they are Ferrari Bentley - after all, VW thought it was worth buying as a brand. A good brand for both chavs and gentleman with a certain edge. Merc - solid engineering perception - why else would you buy as A class? BMW - people still think they are the ultimate "I'm successful" driving machine (and how long have they not had that advert)? Land Rover - the ultimate 4x4xfar, even now, but probably only regarding the Defender family Range Rover - yep, very cool brand. I'm successful and I can go anywhere.

For me, top brand would be Porsche - they're the ones I'd rate as AAA+. They make money no matter the economic outlook or the trends in car buying preferences. Other top brands like RR, Bentley and Range Rovers can still catch a cold now and then and see that reflected in their profits but Porsche just seem immune. Mercedes are increasingly a company of Sprinter vans and A-Class hatchbacks (the new Corsa), who also have a stab at luxury cars.

If I was trying to look at it through the eyes of friends who aren't car obsessives then I'd say:-
Ferrari Porsche Merc BMW, Audi VW
Lambo might be up there and if they remembered Maserati existed then they might do quite well too.
Then there's be a gap and you'd get Toyota
Then another gap and Hyundai/Kia
Then a huge gap and finally all the normal European marques, Ford, SEAT, Puegeot, etc.
