It’s being launched tomorrow so we’ll have to wait to see the size of the grille, but it looks wider and possibly more square.

Slightly concerning - the 5 Series is the best looking BMW saloon at the moment. Hope they haven't fucked it up.

I wonder if after market replacements will be long in arriving.

If you were in the market for a 5 Series then the facelift isn't going to put you off judging by those pictures.
Still prefer the bottom one however

It is. I think it's a small improvement due to the more modern looking headlights and thankfully you don't really notice the slightly larger grille.

I'm not sure about these little chrome adornments on the front wings behind the wheel. It's almost as if they have to have them so you can distinguish between the 3,5 and 7 series, because without them it's difficult.

Much better than their other attempts but I think the older version is better.

I still can't understand why they don't have a huge wide grille to appease the Chinese market with a small set of kidneys in the middle to maintain brand position. That way you can opt for body colour / black / chrome wide bit and a daintier set of kidneys.
I find the current 5er grille to be very car-colour sensitive with black vertical vanes far preferable to the chrome ones (which The Gorilla has but obviously on a smaller scale!)

If the dark blue one above had black grille vanes it would probably look much better.
Without that there's a bit of Ken Dodd going on.

I must admit I got a "Thank you for sharing your opinion" email. Possibly due to not being rude about it.

Was looking for a picture earlier and spotted this one, can’t believe how small the grille looks. I do hope the trend for increasing grille size stops soon. Audi started it about 15 years ago with the A4/A6, but at least they split it in two with the number plate and black plastic, but not sure how they get away with less criticism now as they’ve also gone way too far (as have Mercedes). They’re semi-saved by number plates, but look at an A6 without one.....

From BMW Blog Failing to see how this represents positive progress. Still I suppose slight uglification is better than a complete thwack with the ugly stick.

I’ve had a scan through the video launch and don’t think it looks worse than the old model. Biggest changes are tech related, every engine other than the M550i will have mild hybrid technology and the anti roll system is now electrical. Company car drivers will be pleased to have the option of a 545e, 6 cylinder petrol and 388hp. Some small but useful to some changes inside, it now has Android auto and full integration with that and Apple CarPlay which I’m not aware of on any other car (integrated into instruments and HUD). Bigger news for the UK is we’re getting the M550i, 4WD, 523hp, 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, £67,500 list (£55k ish when discounts kick in) which is £30k less than an M5 Competition. I don’t understand why they’re not going to sell the estate though, would make much more sense as it’s close in (straight line, 0.4 sec slower to 60) performance to the M5 so would give fast BMW fans an Estate option for not much more than half the price of a B5. Also available in a colour combination some forum members might like....(this is the M550i)

M550i for £55k sounds like a bargain to me . You’re right about the estate though

If you weren't fussy about colour and spec then I suspect that £55k 550i could very soon be had for a number in the high 30s.

I prefer it. The last one looked a bit too middle-aged, fat saloon (M5 notwithstanding) whilst this one looks a bit more sleek and a bit more the sports saloon a BMW should be.

It's on the configurator. Despite resisting the B&W speakers, M5 seats and Alcantara headlining, I got 'my' M550i to £88,945 which is going to be over £75k.

Taste as ever is subjective, but I just see the same design but with clunkier detailing. Like a close but imperfect Chinese copy of the original (perhaps the intention)
I've never liked this trend for excessively large and angular detailing that Audi and now BMW have been adopting. I prefer smooth, sleek designs.
The headlights are unnecessarily uglier. The grille is unnecessarily more prominent and uglier. The front bumper is verging on dog's-breakfast, like that of the current 3-series.
I think this might be the first time I haven't preferred an LCI 5-series to its predecessor.

So what?
Doesn't detract from the fact that they let a blind child hack at the front end with a set-square and some lego.

The SE trim looks much better, the slabs of chrome in the bumper being much better integrated.
