I really like this idea. It’s not quite as good as visiting the factory, but it would be pretty special to see your new car getting built.
”The online “My Porsche” platform is now becoming even more attractive: the new “Behind the Scenes” function gives customers an exclusive insight into production at the sports car manufacturer in Zuffenhausen.
Customers can follow how their ordered car is being built step-by-step. For the two-door 911 and 718 sports cars, Porsche has already installed cameras at two relevant stations and linked them to the production software. Two more cameras will be added soon.”

Two cameras at relevant stations is great, but how many stations are there? It's a good concept from an experience point of view, though.

Can you imagine logging on and watching some big German battering fuck out of the doors of your new car to get them to fit properly?

It says 2 more will be added, but I don’t know how many stations/stages there are and what you’ll see. We liked the VW app which showed different stages such as entering production, complete, shipped, arrived in UK etc but this is on another level. I know Ferrari send (some?) customers pictures of their car during production and you can or used to be able to pay to see your Range Rover being built, but I don’t know what other manufacturers do. I’d love to do a factory collection at some point, but it’s a pretty rare option these days. BMW offer it for US customers, but not us for some reason.

Of course Morgan offer the chance to visit the factory to see your car being built. You can visit several times as the progresses from chassis to coachwork, paint and trim and get to chat to the craftsmen along the way.
When I had my Silver Shadow I had copies of all the factory build records, with each section signed off by individual sections of the factory. It was interesting to see comments on what parts were sent back for rectification of minor detail faults before being deemed good to go.

We quite often get the customer coming to view their cars in build, usually tied in with when they have their seat and steering wheel measurements done. I'm also currently doing a video lapse of the build of the first customer Mono R, which I expect will make its way online at some point.
It's actually surprising how few of our customers choose to collect their cars from the factory - most opt for a transport company to collect and drop off for them. I've probably only met 50% of our customers in person, and that's either when I'm doing their pedalbox measurements or when he have an owners' event organised.

I'm not surprised at that stat really, but it is disapointing.

Are you ordering one then Martin?? I'll take that yellow one in the last picture - yum! I know the latest 911's got mixed reviews, but they look incredible...

The yellow one looks like a scale model.

It was in the plan for the next fleet change, as we were both keen to get back into a Porsche, but that will need to be pushed back now due to the other new arrival. Although he would fit in the back of a 911....but it's not right for now and I can't justify spending that much with all the other expected outgoings. Maybe in 4-5 years time when my maintenance payments stop.

I see we are in the same boat there then too!
I got away with no spousal maintenance but even for one child, child maintenance was a grand a month, though in a year's time I can lower that to be in line with what will be quite considerably lower earnings....
I have more than a bit of a Porsche bug at the moment, I will get a whole 15% of the value of the house when we sell it (in process) and was wondering about getting some kind of SH 6-cylinder Boxster or something else similarly depreciation proof. That was before the current crisis, now I could even consider a 911 as my only car as I use it so much less. I'm guessing even the oldest SH 911 targas are far more than I'll have to spend but I'll have a look. At the moment Tina's twins are 7 so will fit in a 911 (though they will also trash it!)..... May be a good time!

May be a good time! I'm paying for two at the moment, it won't be for much longer, but the second child 'only' adds 50% rather than doubling the maintenance. I didn't get any equity from the house, I did get to keep all my pension pot which was worth broadly the same at that point, but Lindsay is planning to go back to work next year, but then there's nursery costs which will be slightly more than the new maintenance payment plus a family holiday and all the normal living costs. That probably adds up to half a new 911 in a year. My choice and I'm not complaining, well apart from the maintenance cost which is sufficient to allow the ex Mrs M to sit at home all day.... I'd have to buy the twins some sort of straight jacket I think....I hope you're managing to educate them!

But I wouldn’t want to mange the daily hassle of getting a baby in the back seat. It’s brilliant in the back for kids up to 5 feet tall, but no more than that. So your 5 yr plan would be perfect - you’d have a circa 5 yr window where the child would be perfect Porsche size!

My middle son will be 18 in 4 years time and hopefully driving with his own car. That will save me over 10k miles a year and makes the man maths even easier.

We once went to some friends' house for a party and I was surprised to see a JCW MINI on the drive as the chap had a 911 previously. Someone at the party asked him about the lovely kitchen in the house and rather indiscreetly asked how much it cost. "It cost me a Porsche" he said.
