How can you fuck up the design when it's the same as last time + a few bits? Porsche Board interviewing potential candidate: "How would you not fuck the design up?" Candidate: "Fire the current one through the photocopier, widen the doors a bit, spend 5 minutes adding a few lines with the crayons and Bob's your Uncle". Board: "When can you start?". I think the 911 has plenty of competitors, just none of them has the engine dangling out the back. Similarly the Panamera has loads of competitors - I'm sure Martin and John would consider one to replace their BMWs, then there's the AMG 4 door coupe GT thing and basically anything with 4 doors, lots of power and a premium badge. Ben Oliver in CAR prefers the interior of his Audi SQ8 to that of the Bentley GT and I'm sure that anyone in the market for a £100k 4 door will be looking at higher end SUVs as well as saloons. Its just rather boring to suggest 911's all look the same. They all drive amazingly therefore what prices a 996 less then a 993 or a 997 or the 964 more then all of them? Looks, Even my mother can easily tell them apart You don't get he 911 so no point in trying to change your mind but I'm always amazed that people who aren't into 911's are into cars. They're just bloody awesome. Spend some time in one and you'll appreciate there is little to touch one. I'm not being serious when I say they all look the same but you could take a 1970s one, park it next to a new one and, assuming the sun was in the right direction to avoid a massive shadow, tell they were the same model but 40 years apart. Try doing the same for something like a Civic or even a Golf. I suppose you could say the same about Lambos and Ferraris too. I think my lack of appreciation of the 911 comes from being an awkward type and not liking to be told how great something is often, and oddly probably not in the case of the 911, despite there being clear competition that is just as good but with an inferior badge. For example, I'm not keen on E-Types either.

Or the hardest job in design. You fuck up the 911 and your careers over. I love 911's and don't particularly like the 992 as its vastly changed to a 991. I never understand how the 911 gets a reputation for "just put the photocopier on 110% and thats the new 911 chat". Surely every successful car line is the same, be it VW Golf, BMW 3 series, Range Rover etc. The 911 still stands alone unfortunately. I'd love for more manufactures to compete with the car. From memory the last manufacturer that did with was Renault with the A610 . The 911s sell well because its a daily sportscar. Not flash compared to the competition and thats down to the familiarity, you can do the daily grind and then turn up at Silverstone, have a good thrash around all day and then drive home. At the weekend you can take the missus and kid out. Its just a fabulous piece of design and its embodied in motorsport domination. The Taycan is by far the best looking electric car on sale and the Panamera is again another product that no other manufacturer competes directly with (Maybe an Alpina). I don't particularly think they are designed with the UK market in mind but if you lived in Germany I can see it making a lot of sense. There is no competition for the 911,I have tried most and sometimes bought but I always return to the 911 .There are much much better looking cars,but in terms of useability and how they drive there is nothing that comes close . But I agree it's annoying to be constantly told that,problem is it is true.

Obviously that exposes me to the possibility that I might like it and that could lead to wallet meltdown.

It's very personal this stuff,there isn't a right or wrong ,and if we all liked the same thing we would all be driving the same car which would be mightily boring.I think its the useabilty of them,if you go for a quick blast for example a ferrari may impress you more initially ,but then you would find the ferrari too wide on good roads,etc and you would find yourself looking at it in the garage more than driving it,the 911 you drive,to the shops,to the track,on the track then drive home ,there are very very few cars that can do that. And the boxsters and caymans are just as good in many respects but they are kept in check by Porsche branding philosophy. And I may get slapped by the driving gods but I am not a fan of the older 911s ,some seem to think that displaying huge skill to keep a car on the road at modest speeds means a car is great,I think that is a deeply flawed car.

I think part of my ambivalence is that the driving gods who write about them are all so in thrall but a few limited examples of cars that they've had an opinion on have made me sceptical as I couldn't see the reason for the love or hate.

Agreed. One of the best features of a modern 911 is the predictability. I’ve never had an unexpected ‘moment’ in one. Sounds dull to some I guess but it adds to the confidence you can drive one with. I’ve got a mate with an early f type. Don’t know if it’s that particular car, the tyres or normal for a rwd f type but that car on a wet country road is a handful. That can be fun for 5 minutes but no joy on a rainy November night when you just want to get home intact.

I like the 992 however I think the pre turbo 991 is where it's at. N/a engine, sleeker/less fussy design, manual option, and i prefer the interior.
I've got no issue with the samey looks over the years either. Apart from the 996 I can't think of a 911 that I don't like.

I think its round the rear end that it looks a bit heavy. I think it would help if there wasnt such a bulge over the rear end.

There's been a trend recently for cars to extend a lot lower behind the rear wheels and across the back and this is afflicted. The Audi A6, particularly in Avant form, is another that springs to mind.
