So John Noakes is dead, eh?
I'm genuinely sorry about this. A big part of the collective childhood experience, and I always thought a genuinely top bloke (like Johnny Ball).

I agree with that. I think Johnny Ball is still going fairly strong nowadays. His enthusiasm for numbers was infectious though. Maybe I've got him to thank/blame for a career as an accountant

For me the overriding memory of John Noakes (and one of the things I remember most from kids TV) was his record breaking free fall parachute jump from 5 miles up in 1973. For a while it was the British record for a civilian parachute jump. He earned his Blue Peter badge that day. We spent most of the summer jumping off the garage roof onto the next door neighbour's front lawn until they complained to my parents about the constant procession of kids falling past their lounge window while they were trying to watch Nationwide.

I think the biggest memory is the pathetic conduct of the Beeb over Shep the Blue Peter dog. He was being retired and Noakes had spent the most time with/kept the dog. What was so important about keeping the animal out of Noakes hands?
Clearly I have too much time on my hands today.

Apparently one of the conditions was that he not use Shep in advertising that he might be involved with. So he got a dog that looked all-but-identical for said purposes!
