It's the purple lighting that's hooked you isn't it? Apart from the leather and the Rover SD1 dashboard (that look sticks in my mind and while it was fine in the 70s I don't like it on a modern car) I like that To be fair I like the external styling of the S-Class and find the interior merely "just about bearable" (another way of saying "it's fairly hideous but I'd cope").

I cannot believe how big the grille is compared to the old one.

That vent module not lining up with the central stack is annoying.

That vent module not lining up with the central stack is annoying. It probably does when you view it from the driving seat.

The armrests look like a naked leathery old fella bending over in the gym changing room.

Funky but is it luxury?

Quite. Putting an expensive leather cover on your phone does not make it a luxury item. Well not in my eyes, although now I write that I realise that in the markets this is really aimed at, that probably does constitute luxury.

Covering surfaces with nice soft leather makes a huge difference to the feeling of luxury. The pictures are unlikely to be of the standard car. One of the problems with the current S Class is you have to spend a small fortune to get decent leather on the dashboard/doors and it’s not particularly luxurious as it looks more like their pleather.

I like the steering wheel . That's about all I can say about it too. Hate the big screen in the middle.

I quite agree with that in cars. But it will be interesting to see if that still make such a big difference when in front of you is a shiny screen or three. I think it is just that I don't like Merc's current interiors. The instruments have that ipad glued to the dashboard look which I think detracts from the potential overall luxury.

I love a bit of tech, but don’t particularly like them either, especially as you move further up the range.

Ok. Looks quite imposing and smooth. I like the door-handles but that shoulder line is pure A8 and the rear end is just generically current Merc and not as good as the old model (which is quite a looker by barge standards).
However....those seats! My eyes! Yeuuuuurghhhhh! Like an especially hideous cut-price sofa from World of Leather.

I am sure it will be a luxurious tech fest but I am not sure about the grill (which seems to be a common theme at the moment). I am also sorry to hear of the demise of the S Class Coupe. I really enjoyed driving the S63 at Mercedes World a couple of years ago. It was unbelievably capable for something so big, ridiculously quick and luxurious all at the same time. I also think it looks great with really nice proportions.
A well known local painting and decorating contractor (he does large contracts for housebuilders etc) who lives a few miles from me in a huge house with about a mile of 10 ft high wall and railings around it, has had 3 since the current model was launched. His current one is a 560 in a nice silver colour that has hints of blue in the sunlight.

Agree with Racing on the seats: chavtastic.
Surely no one buys these to drive for themselves - you either have a chauffeur or you are one.

Another who thinks those seats are just vomit inducing. I just don't think Merc designers understand the difference between luxury, opulence and chavness. But the front looks better than I feared. I am sure it will be as super a luxo-barge as the last S-class and totally fit for purpose. Mile munching waftiness (self driven or chauffeured) and a better class of taxi.
