Which car have you owned that you'd own again now if you could have a brand new, factory fresh example? My head say the Discovery but my heart says the Punto Sporting.

The Silver Shadow - heart choice.
Mercedes E estate - head choice.

Punto HGT or Alfa GT V6. Both bought new originally. If I could have the Alfa in addition to the current fleet that would be ok, I think I understand it better now than I did when I had it. The Punto would be my ideal backroad car - small, light, nimble, revvy engine with enough power but not too much that it'd get you into trouble after more than a couple of seconds at full throttle.

None but I had the thought of an MX-5 and nearly did it. Perhaps that as an almost buy.

Same one I have now - would love a factory-fresh version, suitably remapped.

For fun it would be my old 106. It wasnt a quick model but being an early diesel it had the all alloy 1.4 engine as opposed to the later 1.5 which had a heavy iron block to allow it to be turbocharged (it never was), therefore the 1.4 version didn't have as much weight over the front and could really be chucked into corners at speeds some of my much newer more powerful company cars wouldn't dare. Looked good in laser green with Key Largo special edition matching seatbelts.

As I’ve usually moved onto something better and like change, there isn’t really one. Perhaps the Boxster, as I do miss that on a regular basis, but I’d still rather have a new 4.0 Boxster GTS.

Probably the Golf but not the one I owned. I'll take a factory fresh 06 one to avoid the ridiculous VED bill ta!

The Honda, without a doubt. If only Honda UK would import the current model, the Jazz Shuttle......

The Z1. I miss having one dreadfully, especially when the sun is out and I fancy just going for a drive. I'd have either a Pur Blau one with the camouflage leather interior, or a UrGruen one with the red leather interior. The GC's a lovely multi-talented machine that ticks many necessary boxes, but it's just not really that sort of car.
But, given the problems with pre-2006 cars and ULEZ here in London (which would also apply to the 500E), a last-of-the-line 2009/10 E60 M5 with the LCI interior, and the upgraded iDrive and better gearbox software mapping that the last model year cars got would run it very, very close. I would probably keep the colour combo "as was" unless I was permitted some Individual options, in which case Oxford Green with Caramel leather and darker woodwork.

Many.
I've never owned a new car, but I would love another of:
205 GTi 1.9. Obvious, really 405 Mi16x4. Despite it being an unreliable heap, it was a fantastic thing to look at, sit in and drive. Astra GTE 8v. Honda Civic 1.6i16. Basically the hatch version of Big Blue's CRX. Absolute weapon of a thing and built to last. Subaru Legacy Turbo. Warble warble warble whooooooosh. Mondeo Mk3. Probably the best car I have ever owned, pound for pound.

A nice Mk1 Eunos Roadster, a nice limited edition such as a G Limited, or, even better, an RS Limited. Equally, I still really miss the ZT260.

The 993 but only if I can do a restomod on it and turn it into a GT2 lookalike.
The GT4 was great and I'd love another but wasn't really a daily driver so would take my old 2.7 Cayman all day long. I keep looking at 981 Cayman S on Autotrader in an unhealthy way.
The only other car I liked which wasn't a great car but got under the skin a little was my old BMW 130i. Was it Martin, Piers and myself who all had Le mans blue ones at the same time?

My current car, with the upgrades from factory. I think even if I'd've bought one brand new back in late 05 or whenever it was they came out, I'd still have it today. Getting insurance would've been a real issue however

The E60 in M Sport and M5 flavours has aged really well externally. Good old Bangle.

The Legacy. I miss the E500 in many ways, but the reliability and bills were a problem.

It's a close run thing between two cars - For sheer wanting to look back at it when I parked it, the XK8, in exactly the same colour (Pacific Blue with cream sport interior), but I'd take an XKR instead. For overall excellence my current XFR (or perhaps the XFR-S estate version?)

I'm torn between the Spec B and my Twin-cam Mirafiori.
Given that the dogs aren't fit enough to get in the car now, I think for that reason only I'd plump for a (properly rust-proofed!) Fiat.

I think it would have to be the E39 - so much about that car was as close to perfect that it remains the most impressive car I have ever driven given it's relative affordability and ubiquity. It was such a fabulous machine that I could never articulate how much of a disappointment the then new E60 was when I had one as a courtesy car. E60s got much better (or maybe it was just that my memories of the E39 faded over time). I loved my X300 XJ6, but I never drove a new or nearly new one, whereas I had the pleasure of many a new or recent X308 XJ8 and, like the E39, it's one of the few cars I've driven where the overall experience was even better than the already high expectations I had of it. Even as an entry level 3.2, they were lush.

Ok this is Malachite rather than Oxford but...hubba... Lovely. However, I sat in an E60 M5 a couple of years ago at a classic auction and was surprised at how bare and basic the dash felt. The teeny plastic gearshift paddles were a huge disappointment too, I'd need to replace them with something bigger and metal.

That I don't recall. But then mine had the optional (something like £5k) Full Merino leather interior meaning that the dashboard and every possible surface was covered in high-grade leather, the roof-lining was Alcantara and then it also had lashings of (rather orange) Madeira Walnut trim. In my experience, the leather dash in a BMW makes a big difference.
I regret not having specified it on the GC, but apart from it costing nearly £1k, I wasn't prepared to wait an additional four months for delivery (due to it being an Individual option) and risk the first registration date tipping me into the new tax regime.

It's a really hard question to answer because there is no doubt that modern cars are miles better than cars we remember from the past with fond memories.
The car that I really enjoyed most was probably my MK2 Golf GTi. I drove it well over 100,000 miles and every time I could, I got it 3 wheeling on the on and off ramps of the Erskine Bridge. Also had a memorable "race" with an 840i over about 30 miles of A and B roads that I knew well - he wasn't pleased that a FWD hatch was cornering significantly faster than he was. A very close second would be my MK1 XR2 which was the epitome of a Go-Kart. The Golf might 3 wheel on the slip roads but the XR2 would go round 5mph faster although it could snap into oversteer which wasn't funny.
Also very fondly remembered would be my W124 E300-24 in blue black metallic (a bit like BMW carbon black). It was the first car I had with plenty of flippery goodness. Cruise control, heated seats, folding, heated mirrors, electric seats and sunroof, air conditioned glove compartment etc etc. It was a great cruiser but could handle and corner way way better and faster than anything that size had the right to go. It also averaged 24mpg and would do over 30mpg easily on a run. As a car and a quality item this was probably the daddy.
However none of the above would compare with my current car (except in economy) for comfort, speed, sophistication, grip or almost any measure of how you compare cars. Time moves on and today's cars are just so much more capable.
I'd also like to get my old E92 335D and test it for acceleration because that car always felt as though it had an extra 100HP and was just as fast as my friend's E92 M3 up to the point where things got silly. I never felt that my 435D had the same grunt as the old car despite being an official 20HP more and much quicker on paper.

If I could revisit any daily car it would probably be either the MK2 Golf GTi or the MK4 Golf tdi130 (that went quicker than the A3 140tdi which succeeded it)
I would be keen to try all of the toys ie the 911, Elan and E30 cab as factory fresh examples

I quite enjoyed my Xsara VTS for the two weeks out of the year and a half I owned it when it wasn't being a totally useless unreliable heap of merde. Fuck me, that car was terrible!

Only the XFR's (either of them) and the Caterham probably. Cars do improve a lot over the years and while the GTA was a lovely thing in its day, having spent 5 years in something with twice its 250bhp would make it feel dull by comparison! I've never had anything in the true classic mould like Racing's Z1...
