Well, sort of. Herself had issues with her Superb recently, which led to a replacement water pump and belts followed by (another SIX days later) a new crank sensor when that failed and caused it not to start.
She had got extremely fed-up staying in pretty much all day while I was at work; absolutley hates not having her own car to hand. So, on Thursday she made a call and arranged to go and see a car a friend of ours had for sale (he's kind of a repairer/dealer/fixer sort of fella we've known for years). Saw it, drove it, liked it; got £100 knocked off "because it's you", got her own car back and swithered. Then, after a conversation with my daughter to the effect she is freaking out at having to use public transport (lives in Leith but works in Edinburgh - so far - so has to get the bus and is seriously unhappy about it.
Question therefore arose - why not give her the car? So we did, emboldened by the news that she and her partner are, as of 29th February, engaged!! Anyway, meet Gloria, a Corsa Sxi+ 12V which will be 14 years old (registered) come the 29th of this month.
The photos flatter to deceive; the paint, especially on the bonnet, is dire and there's a few scrapes elsewhere. The exhaust is Irmscher twin-pipe (well you can see that, sorry!) and as for the spoiler .. .. ..
.. .. .. on the plus side, a recent MOT with only 2 advisories for front bushes, engine sounds sweet at 124K miles and inside is tidy and in fairly decent nick other than the bolster on the (leather clad) drivers seat. My only gripe is, it's cost me half as much again to insure/tax it as it did to buy!!!
Still, it has made my girl's day, cheered her up about still having to go into the office and made it much easier for her to come and see us when she's able and not have to use the bus/train.
It'll do for me.

That doesn't look too bad actually. Nice work.

Needs new number plates, and the alloys could do with refurbishment.... Plus we haven't seen the interior to find out if the carpets have "Piers stripes" or not.
I'd do something quick about the rust around the door edge though, even if it's just a quick sandpapering followed by primer and touch up, or hammerite

Looks like an 'honest' motor, not flash but will do the job. I hope it keeps on doing what you need it to do.

Shame about the spoiler and exhaust, but sort out the rust and it’s pretty much ideal, a lot better than public transport! My parents bought my Nephew a 1.2SXI just before Christmas, white with black alloys, ideal for a 17 yr old boy. I had a ride in it and it was better than I expected and is in great condition (2009/59).

(Other things on my mind at the time tbh). As Martin says, the plates are 'disguised' but perfectly serviceable in reality. As for the wheels, well they can wait quite frankly! She hasn't drivwen for over a year, so a refurb would be a waste of money!! Needs new number plates, and the alloys could do with refurbishment.... The exhaust doesn't stand out visually too much, noise is a bit loud and quite deep, (as in bassy) but not really noticeable on the move, from trhe inside at least. The spoiler isn't my cup of tea really, but both daughter and Herself quite like it!! No accounting for taste, really.
For the princely sum of £400, I reckon it's a bit of a steal!

Good parenting!

I thought that the "Piers stripes" might have made you realise my comments were largely tongue-in-cheek.....the plates because they have been disguised.
For just a few hundred, that has to be a bit of a bargain. The pipes and spoiler will certainly make it stand out

For £400 that's a bargain motor. Well, apart from the spoiler - could that have an accident?

Gloria? I now have the song “I will Survive” stuck in my head! Good parenting! She had been listening to Van Morrison yesterday, and loved his song 'Gloria'. Equally good parenting I'd say, though I shall let her know of your reference too!

That spoiler is awful. I'd be removing that ASAP! I'd leave it - the speed Corsas overtake me it'll need the downforce.

It is pretty harmless and not a complete eyesore.

That would be ideal for a late night McDonald's car park. If McDonald's were not shutting up shop.
400 quid makes it ideal. Job done!

Update: Given the issues cited by Halfords to my daughter the other week, she decided to give it up even though we got it fixed and MOT'd.
Stuck a cheeky (free) ad on the 'trader last night, young guy came to look at it at 4 o'clock, and I was on the DVLA site at half past advising them of the sale!
Best bit is, Herself only paid £300 for it a year ago, then £160 last week to fix and test it. Put it up for £495 ono and sold for .. .. ..
.. .. .. £460 cash!
So, other than tax & insurance, the car itself cost nothing!!
The only time I've ever come close was selling my first Golf for £75 - a 'profit' of 50%!!!
ETA: The fella liked the name and said he's going to keep calling it 'Gloria'! Wonder what his girlfriend will think?!

So, what has it been replaced by ? Nothing. Daughter doesn't really need a car (Edinburgh is a horrible place to try and drive round) as she is still working form home sandf that will likely continue for a good while yet. Plus, her and partner are saving up to get married next year, so saving on the tax/inusrance/running costs is key for them at the moment.
