By the time my pot is taxed there is bugger all left so may as well have a car. One plan is Mrs M will mainly use it for her 30mile commute and I'll use the Yeti for the station run when I'm not working from home....with a view to getting another toy to make the run more interesting, I like the idea of a R53 Mini cooper S jcw or Audi S4 convertible pre facelift for that V8 Kia Soul ev or Hyundai Kona would in effect be free cars forme Good man maths....one ‘free’ car means you can buy another! There is the tax you pay on the car as well as what’s left of your allowance after tax, so you would have a pot of money, which means it’s not exactly free. It’s certainly a very cheap car if you went for the Kia or Hyundai though, assuming you mean full electric.

Please correct me if I sound daft but how is the X model almost double the price of the base model given that it just adds a load extra equipment and am I right to question the logic of developing three different types of LED headlights for one model of vehicle. I'm sure the New Defender is going to be a great car but it's incredibly expensive so surely not going to be the old faithful workhorse of your every day farmer. Perhaps that's why they drive Japanese 4x4s and pick ups these days. That's exactly why they buy pickups. Truly basic vehicles that do what farmers need them to do. In reality, the old Defender started it's trendy move upmarket a while ago and I guess it's only the basic build and longevity of the old car that kept it suitable as a utility vehicle. On the one hand it's a shame the new car doesn't do that but it's a totally different market and I would guess trying to out sell Toyota and Nissan pickups would be an impossible task. I absolutely love the new Defender. I reckon they've nailed it.

I don’t know any farmers with a pick up round here. They all have a Discovery for their own use and Kubotas for the farm.

I had a long look at the configurator. a 110 with a few options still comes out at£47k plus a bit. I like the Gondwana stone too. With this being a high risk for steal to order and a lot of people out to relieve owners of the chore of washing them means the security is possibly underdone but I don't know what is the bottom line.

Good write up. I had a poke around in one a few month back when they did the dealership tour and they look great. I like how usable they seem to be and it’s close to my perfect car. The boot is too small, though. It’s a good height but it lacked the depth I need at the moment. However, that will certainly be fixed by the 130 model so my perfect car may yet be built.

^ Yes, but is that UK-only where they have dropped the 4-cyl, or world-wide?

Just read that they’re dropping the 4 cylinder diesel and replacing it with the new 6 cylinder in 200/250/300 states of tune. I read the article in Autocar on-line and assumed it was a typo - that the new D300 engine was the 6 cylinder. But I had a look at the configurator and it was correct - all the diesels are now 6 cylinder mild hybrids. I think there has been some price changes to match the engine change as the cheapest engine in the 90 now looks to be the P300 (300hp) petrol 4 cylinder. But in the 110 the D200 is still cheaper than the P300. Odd? There's also an expensive 400hp PHEV (same engine as in the RRS), but it's only available in some 110 models. The Hardtop 90 and 110 have also been launched. The 90 is only available with the "base" (it is 6 cylinder, so maybe least powerful is a better description?) D200 MHEV engine, the 110 with either the D250 or D300. I see some time on the configurator being necessary

The 90 has been on the configurator for a good 4 months, but the models advertised (D200 and D240 4 pot) will never be built (I think).
The new D200 and D250 6 pots have a lower co2 rating than the outgoing AJ20 4 pots (228 vs 232), but the AJ20 is being replaced by the AJ21 which has just been launched in the 21my Evoque and Disco Sport (So the D150 is replaced by the D165 and the D204 replaces the D180, D200 and D240).
It’s fair to say Rona has completely nerfed the Defender launch and many other product launches, so I suspect there has been some hasty realignments.
Personally, it’s great that Defender is going to be a 6 cylinder vehicle in the main.

I don’t know any farmers with a pick up round here. They all have a Discovery for their own use and Kubotas for the farm. Depends on the type of farming, probably. Mostly arable or lowland mixed won't have such a need for a pickup. All, and I mean all the hill farmers here (exclusively livestock) run pickups. Kubotas/gators/other brands available can't tow full size trailers.

I’m struggling to think of a farmer I know who doesn’t have a pick up. The farmer across the road has a Mitsubishi and it’s in constant use on the farm but I think the tax advantage of a commercial vehicle make it a no-brained to run them. It’s the same reason the Discovery commercial is so popular around here.

^ Yes, but is that UK-only where they have dropped the 4-cyl, or world-wide? I think that's an interesting point. I wonder if the decision has been based on UK buyers shunning the 4cyl diesel for the 6. On a global basis I reckon there's stil going to be a 4cyl diesel in some markets.

We're overrun with pickups too - mainly 8 or 9 year old L200s. Judging by the state of them they're actually VERY hard wearing!
