I lucked out by being invited to one of the Defender Launch days for Retailers and Press at Eastnor on March 4th. Defender is still under embargo - so I cannot tell you about the car, but we were encouraged to post pictures and talk about the day. So - all I can say is, Eastnor is the Yeti's plums. It was quite hard to take decent " off roady " pictures - so these will have to do. free image upload

Looks like a fab day out. I did Eastnor a few years ago in a Discovery 4.

It is indeed - I did half a day there in a RR Sport - amazingly capable machines but didn't require much from the driver apart from pointing it in the direction you wanted to go - going up the steps was mind boggling at the capability it has

Embargo lifted… I spent the afternoon in the silver car – a D240 SE. Obviously – the vast majority of the driving was off road, but the stand out points are as follows: - Defender is on a beefed up Disco/RRS/RR platform which results in a much stiffer body shell and even more durable suspension components. The output is easily demonstrated – the instructors sent us down a heavily rutted and potholed track and said drive down it at 30 mph. I went quicker than that and it was a genuinely incredible thing to experience (due to the fact that we are purposely smashing these things into holes that would wipe out a normal car and the ride quality and general body beefcakery whilst doing so). There are some videos somewhere of the Defender curb test which consists of driving one at 45kph into a standard UK curb stone (and then driving off with nothing broken). - The 2.0 diesel installation is very quiet and the torque swell made light work of what must have been nearly 3 tonnes or vehicle + passengers - The off road ability is a notch above the existing D7U cars (which are very, very good in standard form) and that down to a multitude of additional tweaks and refinements (approach, break over, departure angles – the super, duper extended lift mode which gives more lift than on it’s sister cars, the upgraded terrain response, etc). - It is massive – both inside and out (and I’m not sure that’s welcome given the pressure that mass and weight puts on emissions and fuel economy) - The rubber floors (not the mats, the actual floors) are interesting. If I was going to have one – I think it would have to be a base D200 with options limited to Pangea Green with the extended wheel arch trims and mud flaps. Very well equipped as a base car and I’m not really seeing the need to go for any more power or lots of jangly bits (although – the diesel 3.0 six would be tempting).

Nice write up, thank you.
I just went through the configurator and without going nuts ended up with near enough £70k, not sure they will accept 50p and a half tube of Polo mints. They are the sugar free though.

I like the look of that, it's much better without the weird body coloured bit mid-window on the 3 door.

That's exactly the spec I'd have. I love the colour (I had a Raleigh Arena racing bike in a similar colour and always loved it), basic diesel engine, A/C and a radio would do me. Can't see the point in anything else.

I think at the moment it is the one new car I would actually get.

Mine came to £48,145 - I did relent a little and threw in a few fripperies like a heated steering wheel.

Just out of interest, what are you adding to the base car to get those numbers ? - are you starting with a bigger engine or higher trim level.
Mine came out under £42k (base + metallic + wheel arch trims + mud flaps).
I had a look at the spec list and you get loads with a base car - (3D surround camera, 360 degree parking, heated front screen, cruise control, wade sensing, lots of electric things).

Even if I stuck with the base engine and seriously restricted myself, I can't get it below £50k, because it's £5k for memory seats as you can't spec on their own.
If I wanted a Defender I'd have to wait for the 3.0d (X would be better, but that's crazy pricing) and it would probably be around £70 based on 'my' D240 spec with a couple of £k added.

How do you spec without the weird side square?
Also any news on the Evoque phev launch?

Please correct me if I sound daft but how is the X model almost double the price of the base model given that it just adds a load extra equipment and am I right to question the logic of developing three different types of LED headlights for one model of vehicle. I'm sure the New Defender is going to be a great car but it's incredibly expensive so surely not going to be the old faithful workhorse of your every day farmer. Perhaps that's why they drive Japanese 4x4s and pick ups these days.

Perhaps that's why they drive Japanese 4x4s and pick ups these days. Because they can. People will always want the best / most expensive and are prepared to pay a premium, although the engine is a lot more appealing than the 4 pot diesels and the extra equipment as standard is pricey on the lesser model eg electric leather seats and better trim for £5k. It’s the same reason / no different to a G63 being about 50% more than a G350d. I know it’s been said a lot, but it’s not aimed at the farmer, although plenty had Disco 1/2/3/4s, so you never know.

What new Japanese 4x4 can you get for £42k this days? (I genuinely don’t know).

.... What new Japanese 4x4 can you get for £42k this days? (I genuinely don’t know). I just looked Toyota Landcruisers up and they range from £41 to £54k for a 5 door 177hp diesel. So, by those standards a reasonable spec Defender is not priced out of its market, however much we might think it is.

By the time my pot is taxed there is bugger all left so may as well have a car.
One plan is Mrs M will mainly use it for her 30mile commute and I'll use the Yeti for the station run when I'm not working from home....with a view to getting another toy to make the run more interesting, I like the idea of a R53 Mini cooper S jcw or Audi S4 convertible pre facelift for that V8
Kia Soul ev or Hyundai Kona would in effect be free cars forme

Just a whisker under £65 grand for "my" 5-door 110 based on the SE spec. I've not included the roof access ladder but am horrified by its £700 price ! You could probably set yourself up as a roofer or window cleaner by spending less on a whole set of ladders
