Colleague rented a full size car this week and we are staying in the same place, doing different jobs so both needed cars. Due to a shortage of cars, my standard SUV became a loaded Audi Q5 Quattro, and his full-size Toyota Camry or equivalent became a Dodge Charger SRT. I had the opportunity to drive it this evening. I drove a Charger when they came out originally and it was a 3.6 litre v6 (as far as I can remember). It was adequate and did the job well enough while being one of the more interesting to drive standard American cars. Driving the SRT is a very different experience. It’s a typical muscle car, sounds incredible and is very fast. There’s nothing special about it inside. It’s well appointed and yadda yadda yadda but the noise is phenomenal. Acceleration is brisk, it’s very quick to be honest, in gear and through them. The trip computer hasn’t been reset yet and one of the previous renters hit an indicated 139mph on it. It’s not surprising to be honest. As cars go, I doubt I’d ever buy one but I’d drive one anytime.
The temptation to floor it is too great though, and it burbles on downshifting, I love the engine but would probably average about 7-8 mpg if I owned one.
It’s the first Hemi I’ve driven as far as I can remember. I can see why it’s so popular. It’s a very different V8 to a European one, but is so much fun. It’s a slice of Americana that is just fun to drive. Do I need one? No. Do I want one? Yes. Does it make sense? Not really.
If you get one as a rental, take it. Big fuel bills but big smiles too.

...It’s a slice of Americana that is just fun to drive... Excellent turn of phrase there. Glad you got the chance to drive it.

"Glad you got the chance to drive it".
Second the motion, before they are legislated off the road.

"Glad you got the chance to drive it". Second the motion, before they are legislated off the road. I'm not sure they'll ever be legislated off US roads. SRT - Street Racing Technologies. I'm sure that would boil the piss of a few of the few anti-car brigade over here.

The Americans do have some interesting hire cars. Not surprised you enjoyed it!
Being a touch pedantic....but I'm pretty sure it would have been an R/T, as the SRT is the supercharged 'Hellcat' with over 700hp and I can't imagine a hire company having one of those. IIRC the R/T has 360-370hp, so 0-60 in just under 6 seconds, both of which are a fair way behind a Mustang which is the same price. But you do get proper rear seats and 2 more doors in the Charger.

You are correct. I checked afterwards and it is the R/T. The car was tested by 3 of us who were travelling. One of the guys has a Corvette and a 997 and he actually did a burnout in traffic! A lot of fun to drive and the whole neighbourhood knows when you start it in the morning. It’s also reasonably practical. 4 grown men fit in it with easily.
