This weeks rental. Expected a standard SUV but got a free upgrade to a Q5 Quattro with leather and panoramic roof. I’ve only driven it about 10 miles, but like it so far. Will update after I’ve driven it several hundred. It’s got about 7,000 on the clock and feels quick off the mark.

I had one as a courtesy car a few years ago - unexceptional but inoffensive to drive. I can imagine it would slip easily into the day to day motoring life,

Well built, engine pulls well in gear, gearbox can be a little reluctant at times, is willing to move in manual mode though, though I experienced a lag- can’t be Turbo as that’s not a thing anymore, is it? But when I dropped a few gears, there was a delay of about 2 seconds before the car moved.
Besides this, I like it and would consider one if I was driving in traffic more often. It’s a nice place to be when you’re not moving much but can move quickly when you need it to. Feels different having a more premium car as a rental though. I’m more conscious of it being a nice car and am more protective of where I park and leave it.
Bizarre feeling...

I drove about 3,000 miles in an A6 TDi and had the same stuff going on with the gearbox, it'd change down, make a lot more noise but there was definitely a delay before that equated to enhanced progress. It was also hesitant to pull away and then suddenly it snapped forward as the elastic bands (I presume) in the drivetrain went tight.
It was a good cruiser though and, on 18 inch wheels, much better through potholes than a 320d on 19 inch runflats!

The engine won't have much lag at all (it's the 250hp version of the 2.0 4 pot in the Golf GTI etc) and it's the same 7 speed DSG as we have, which can be a touch hesitant in comfort as it tries to be as economical as possible, then decides you want to get on with things when you add a bit more throttle and drops down a couple of gears, but is fine in the other modes.
