Here we go then.... just under 2600 pieces to complete the build. The box is big enough... it contains a further smaller white box and bags of bits. Inside the white box are bags of bits, the instruction book and a sheet of stickers. Laid out, they cover most of my kitchen floor ! The first part of the build concentrates on the gears - gearbox, drivetrain etc. This is after step 9 of around 900 !

How long does it suggest this will take?!

It took me about 10 hours total. I didn't see a suggested time in the manual.

Step 73... I reckon it took me somewhere around 12 hours over the course of 8 days (I finished it at tea-time yesterday having started last Saturday afternoon). I did eventually concede defeat in Stage 4, and emptied some of the plastic bags out into bowls instead of trying to fish each piece out

I had a Lego JCB when I was younger that could also be constructed as something else. Does this have an alternative offering? If not what do you do with it when it’s done?

No, there is no alternative model. It will probably go into a large box or bag and end up in the loft ! I found the Lego designer's YouTube account, he's done a motorised version. I queried about building a right-hand drive version and he said it was easy, you just had to mirror the build.... all 850-plus steps !

I've got mine displayed in my office. I also have the Haynes V8 engine model and a die cast old Defender. I've tried to find a die cast Chimaera, but they were rocking horse poo when they were new.

Display it, Chris! Or if it is really going to be just hidden away, dismantle it and sell it on. Then buy another Lego kit.

I wish I had room to display it ! Maybe if I do manage to get another job soon, I will have a desk large enough to place it on (although I'd rather it remains at home).
It's very tempting to dismantle it and ask on here if anyone would give £120 for it, but I think I'd like a go at doing the RHD "conversion" first; just wish I had the time......

Step 150 (still building the gearbox and drivetrain)

Wall mount it? I have a Lego Technic F1 car that lives on the wall, as if driving up it. It's just some thin wire over a hefty picture hook that holds it there.

Step 302 (beginning to look like something now....)
(yeah, sure - just mirror the build for RHD)

The designer has now come up with a pretty amazing alternative build: ... and FWIW I've just completed a Defender build mirroring the instructions so that I've got a RHD version. Quite a challenge for the brain, and I've no intention of stripping it down to try that alternative !
