I agree - looks nice, hope it's not too expensive. It could probably do with a bit more power, as it's a bit less than the Lupo GTI had.

I like that. Would be a great addition for local duties.

That looks spanking. Would love to have a go in one.

Like the Up (though can't bring myself to use the exclamation mark), like that. I'm sure that could be remapped to be quite a feisty little thing, too.

I can't believe that the UP GTi looks bigger than the MK1 Golf GTi. How things have changed. I think that will be a lot of fun and will be reasonably practical too if it's as big as the original Golf.

Hope it looks better in a different colour, as white suits it not. That huge black bit at the front does it no favours. Other than the bumper I quite like it...

I love the up and this sounds great
It only weighs 995kg so the power should be fine , although 135-140hp would be awesome

Give it 200 bhp and then come back.

The engine is the same as I've got in my Golf and it doesn't feel like it deserves the Bluemotion title. Given that it'll take my Estate to 60mph in a shade under 10secs it'll be more than pokey enough for the Up! Trying to give it much more power would need a 4cyl engine which simply won't fit in the engine bay and start adding weight to the front end.

The trouble is, 109Bhp was ample in the Mk1 GTi because it weighed about 800kgs. The Up (Flatly refusing to use the twattish exclamation mark) is 25% up on that. That's a big difference with only 4 more Bhp. Weight is the big killer of performance, whether manufacturers believe it or not. A kerbweight of 1 metric tonne is too much for a car this size, IMO.

Is that why the Up has a quicker 0-60? Only 0.2 secomds, granted, but VAG 0-60 times are frequently proven to be rather conservative. Both the current Golf GTI and Golf R beat their respective book figures.

It's got more torks, that will deal with the weight issue.
I can see the appeal.

200bhp is as much as what the Mk6 Golf GTI had. I don't think that's appropriate for a car this size.
Besides it's not about the numbers. It's about how it feels when driving.

Again, weight is the killer there. Lighter cars are more agile, there is no getting around that. It's physics. 0-60 means absolutely nothing in reality, it's only used to sell cars. When was the last time anyone here actually attempted a 0-60? I've done it once, in someone else's car, 16 years ago.
I'm ploughing a dead furrow here, it's just A N Other warm VW that'll be slammed on its arse with shit split rims wheels in a couple of years time.

You're going the wrong way with your dislike of the VW badge and your criticism of the Up here, as this car will be quicker 0-60 AND in gear than a mk1 GTI. I've almost no doubt that it'll handle better, too, as it has 40 years of chassis development on its older relative.

I'm not doubting it'll be quicker and handle better. It'd be a damning indictment of progress if it didn't. I just don't see anything to get excited about.

I agree 0-60 is irrelevant , but it has a lot of torque for 995kg so it will really shift in gear A bit like the fiesta ecoboost . foot down in 4th on a motorway slip road and a 1.0 shouldn't be able to gather speed like that thing does

Generally I don't like the Up!. In white it particularly looks like a fridge with wheels. This reminds me of the original Cinquecento Sporting though - and I'm a particular sucker for the Gti tartan seats. If I was in my 20s I'd be interested in one.
I'm a bit sceptical about the price though - if a Polo GTi is nearly £20k will this really be under £14k?

I quite agree Blarno and 200hp would get me excited. Unfortunately it's like old age - it's where we are all going like it or not and this or electric will be the future for the masses.

Little pocket rockets shouldn't be about torque but peaky power. This thing will probably be as exciting to drive a vanilla Golf/Polo due to the engine characteristics. My Golf Gti had a nice exhaust note but really didn't encourage you to drive it like you stole it as thrashing it much past 5000rpm due to the torque in the mid range was pointless.

I've driven the Skoda Citigo a few times and can only hope they've significantly lightened the flywheel for this.

As cars go they look quite good and they will certainly be built well. This is I really like Skoda, I think they get more out of the parts bin than VW or Audi do and charge a bit less for it. Having said that Skoda are NOT the bargain they used to be.
