Just received this e-mail:
Hello John,
We would like to inform you about an important change to your Apple CarPlay Subscription as part of BMW ConnectedDrive.
In response to customer feedback, we have adjusted the Apple CarPlay offering to remove subscription periods.
Here’s what this means for you:
For all customers whose vehicles are equipped with Apple CarPlay, BMW is automatically extending the service to be an unlimited runtime, with no end date.
This extension will be at no additional cost to you, and there is no action required on your side.

As it should be! I use CarPlay in the Golf as the std Nav is a bit rubbish, but don’t want to in mine as I’d lose a lot of the benefit of the HUD and the more basic maps from Google/Waze have no place in a 7 series....

I use Apple Car Play to play radio stations/shows I want to hear on the iplayer and not for navigation etc. With most other manufacturers not charging for Apple Car Play, BMW had to do something to join the party. Reading some of the forums, tha CarPlay charge really pissed off some people for whom the cost was obviously not an issue, it was the principle of the thing.

It’s either radio or Spotify for me, which is covered by the BMW app.

Renault still charge 80 odd quid for nav updates for the Captur, which is a proper piss take. Needless to say, it's not been updated.

Apple CarPlay was an option when I bought my car and I didn’t bother, but oddly you can’t retrofit it.

The Micra has CarPlay as standard but I just play Spotify through the bluetooth.
The Audi does the same but regularly loses the connection to the phone - it even managed that yesterday when I was in Tesco for less than 5 minutes but left the phone in the car!
