Had this for a few days now but couldn’t post a review until I’d properly climbed onto my high horse. Some friends needed an 8 seater so borrowed our van. I have their Prius instead for a few days.
It’s an older model but probably about 5 years old at this stage. Thoughts are it’s a weird car to drive. The C-Max Hybrid I drove a few weeks back is a nicer drive and a nicer place to be as a driver. The engine is clever in how it works, recharging the battery under breaking but not freewheeling. The sound leaves a lot to be desired. Years ago, I remember an episode of Top Gear where Clarkson demonstrated the Dodge Vipers ability to pull off in 5th gear from a stopped position. I tried it in my focus at the time and it managed it too, though the smell of the clutch was pretty bad! The reason I mention this is that same sound my focus made when I did that, is the same sound the Prius makes all the time.
Apart from that, I can see why people buy them- they’re frugal- but I’ll stick with something else if I’m going to buy a vehicle that will save me money that way.
We went out last night and I chose to drive my old Lexus instead. 270,000 miles and a slight blue puff of smoke on start up makes me feel I’m contributing to the environment in a more eco friendly way.

BUT, that is proper logic rather than the type used by eco weenies.

That sound doesn't seem normal. Seems like something has gone wrong.

I'm afraid I can't see any reason why someone would buy a Prius. I'll admit I've only been in one, a taxi, and like the Auris hybrid taxi I also travelled in at around the same time, it was a hateful thing. I'm sure newer versions of both are vastly improved but I'm not even vaguely interested in them yet.

I'm afraid I can't see any reason why someone would buy a Prius. I can.... Someone with no real interest in cars and who sees them as just a way of getting from A to B, and who wants as little fuss in doing so (as well as thinking that they are helping the environment) or business reasons..... that's why so many taxis (especially in New York City) are Priuses (or Prii ??)

Well, as someone who used to have one, I'd say they're very good for what they were made to do, which is to save fuel in urban commutes.
If most of your driving is in town and you really want to cut down on your fuel bills, there are few better choices. For some people that's a very appealing package all on its own.

Had the Prius for over a week now. Still not blown away by it. It’s economical and the drone from the CVT is awful. The headlights aren’t great either. I also discovered the passenger side light died last night while I was out. It was fine in the drive thru. It wasn’t once I was back on the road. Over 40 mpg isn’t bad- it’s probably about 7 years old.
Looking forward to my 3.5 V6 fertility wagon being in the drive again.

I bought a diesel to do that and it does it very well indeed. But we're bad for driving diesel now.

I bought a diesel to do that and it does it very well indeed. But we're bad for driving diesel now. Only if you listen to the uneducated and there are loads of them! You create low CO2 emissions and (in a Euro 6 with DPF) only a small amount more NOx whilst consuming less of the earth's finite resources than a petrol and most hybrids. Take into account the resources used in making the batteries and you can relax in the knowledge that you are not the baddy you are made out to be.

Diesels are good too. I'm yet to be convinced that they are more pollutive than petrols.

Hybrids seem to be pointless. Apart from in town you will spend most of the time lugging several hundred kgs of batteries around. A friend has a Prius and I didn't think it was very economical at all. A journey from Fife to Glasgow and back, conducted at no more than 65mph on the motorway, returned 44mpg. A similar size car in diesel form would've easily got closer to 60mpg.

Well they're hardly pointless, they do very well exactly what they were designed to do - reduce urban pollution by travelling on electric when shuffling through congested cities and towns.

Hybrids run on electric only 40% of the time in average city traffic - more in congested places like LA and London.

Perhaps a new one would be better for the city run, I think the one I was in was a 2007 version (although it was only about 5 years old at the time.
When the Mitsubishi PHEV first came out the sales director used the demo one the garage I worked at got to commute and he thought it was brilliant as he plugged it in and used battery only for his 10 miles each way. Forlonger journeys though it wasn't so great as once the electric had been used up you were just on petrol power, assuming you didn't stop somewhere to recharge it for a while which I suspect most people won't do.
