Has anyone ever transported their animals by air? We've been looking into it recently and it's a pricey old business, I wondered if anyone had actually done it.

I'd imagine it is quite stressful for the animals as they go in the hold.
My father's wife flies with their dog a lot but it is a dachshund-cross, so not very big and can go in the cabin in something that looks like a large handbag with a hole at one end.

My dad did it several times. It is a right pain in the arse and the airlines reserve the right to offload a pet as they see fit if they have a change in cargo manifest, for example.

Ours arrived in the country from Cyprus, by air. But not by our arrangement. I can imagine it would be stressful, if not terrifying, for them. Still, a couple of small Newfies won't take up much room.

The simplest thing is to register them as emotional support dogs and they can then travel with you in the cabin.

How many seats would you have to pay for and could you afford that?

They’re not allowed in the cabin of an airline unless they’re very small. I couldn’t put them in the hold, they wouldn’t cope and the other option of hiring a private jet so they can travel in the cabin isn't affordable.

Where were you thinking of going with them? Is it driveable instead?

Emigrating in case of a Corbyn government?

I see a very disorderly queue if there is such a thing that I will not even commit to paper.

Even longer by car but the boat trip would enable adjustment to weather/temperature at the destination. I assume it is still possible to travel that way.

Probably not. You'd maybe have to get a cabin on a container ship.

You'd be better sending them via a cargo airline. They will probably provide a chaperone for them or the shipping agent will.
Modern cargo airlines are fully temperature controlled and pressurised. They will be crated, but these can be as big as you like if you are willing to buy the space.

There are holds on commercial airlines where the area is temperature controlled and pressurised. I can’t put them through that. Only way I’d do it is a private jet and you’ve still got quarantine to deal with.

Racehorses are flown around the World and it doesn’t seem to do them great harm.
Interesting thread as Mrs Sacamano abd I have been discussing our options as to where to emigrated in the event of a Corbyn government.

Yes, I watched a couple of documentaries on YouTube following Lufthansa Cargo and this included some animal transport. They get treated very well.

Could you dress the Newfs up in fancy dress as pantomime horses so that they get good treatment on the flights ??

I would suggest talking to a specialist animals transport company. As said above, horses travel internationally and I'm sure that show dogs and the like do to, and I doubt that it is in "cargo". These came up on a google search - www.pbspettravel.co.uk/pets-jets/We did look at horse transport across to the USA about 15 years ago when I was offered a possible move to the US for work. It was about 4 x a 1st class air fare for transport of each horse.

Not sure this counts but:
In the late '60s my step-dad (who related this tale to me in the '80s) was away in the Far East and had promised to bring my step-sister home a pet (they lived in Canada at the time). He managed to secure a parrot and smuggled it on board, carrying it in the cabin inside his jacket and kept it quiet by generally feeding it at regular intervals and chain-smoking (it was allowed then) to disguise any bird-related odour. Things went wrong at arrivals when the bird was clearly fed up and took a brief flight round the terminal. Upon capturing the errant bird and pulling my step-father to one side he was questioned as to why he had tried to smuggle a parrot into the country.
"Well," he said, "they didn't have an ocelot in the market."
Aaaanyway.... there is another tale of Vietnamese fisherman claiming their boat was destroyed by cows raining from the sky and the freight owners demanding their insurance company recompense them for the loss. The insurance loss was rejected until........
..... a report was uncovered of a lost cargo of live cattle transported by Hercules (don't ask why - I don't know why people do these idiotic things). Something spooked the cattle (well, locked in a plane and hitting turbulence is probably not their natural environment) and they nigh on stampeded in the confined space, dangerously unbalancing the plane to the extent that the crew took the action of lowering the rear load compartment and dropping the (live!) cows from the sky over the sea.
When they checked the claimed location of the Vietnamese fishing vessel and the recorded drop zone from the transporter the insurance was paid out.
Not sure if that helped at all, Michael, but it shows the perils and adventures that go with animal air transportation.
