Mulling the idea over of buying a cheap car to use predominantly by myself, whilst keeping the Mondeo, to use for mainly work trips and the occasional drive to nights out that kind of thing.
With our daughter entering into more and more weekend swimming galas in 2020 Julie, my wife, won't always be able to get lifts with fellow competitors parents to the galas and would need to use the Mondeo, however as i am not currently insured to drive any other vehicle this stops me from borrowing a family members car for the day to get down to work 26 miles away and i work every weekend (defo 1 if not both weekend days) so I'd either have to not work that particular weekend of the gala or find an insurance policy that covers me to drive other vehicles...but I'd much prefer my own little car.
This second part is proving tricky as I (schoolboy error coming up) didn't check the wording on my insurance renewal for 2019/20 and I've only just noticed (2 months after renewing the policy) that it doesn't cover me to drive any other vehicles, it did in 2018/19 with the same insurer, Hastings Direct, i just assumed that as they were the cheapest renewal price for this year the only thing that would change is that i have got a year older and as it turns out the price has come down (they were the cheapest renewal price again). But having spoken to Hastings this evening they cannot add on cover to drive any other vehicles and trying to find a new policy which does cover you is painful, you have to access each individual quote on comparison websites and ask the question to each insurer.
So, to give me some freedom i am thinking of putting some money into a decent reliable maybe retro runabout.
• £1500 max (as i have a budget of £2k and need to factor in insurance, tax and a parking permit)
• small 3 or 5 doors (no saloons, cabrios or estates)
• mustn't have mega mileage, have a good MOT and be cheap to run and not look like it might break down into the first month or so and be in decent nick, i can allow for some quality issues over time.
• must be comfy, so no utilitarian or poverty spec
• no thumping old barge V6 or V8 but must have a decent amount of power
• 2 or 4 seats, must have space for some luggage (so no Mk3 MR2)
• nothing modded in any way
Yes, i could get any manner of hatch even another Mondeo but perhaps i want something a little different, smaller, nothing bland, I'm not expecting fireworks at this price. Nothing in red either, can't stand red cars, darker colours preferably.
A lad a work mentioned a Fiesta ST but my brother had one of them and the interior is just too boring and they've probably all been thrashed.
Thoughts?
