Question for those who know.
I seem to remember from other threards it's possible, even OK, to fit ordinary tyres to BMW wheels that have been/are shod in runflats, yes?
Is rft definitely the indication the tyre is, in fact, runflat? (I know I should be sure of this - but I'm not, despite it making 100% sense!)
Is anyone aware of a substantial price difference one way or the other?
Why does a car badged 118i only have a 14-odd cc engine?
Anyway, basically looking for a cheaper, but still good, alternative to the OEM Bridgestones on a 66-plate version of the above. Ta muchly.

You can fit non run flats to BMW, but I wouldn’t. There will be a price difference but it varies depending on the size of the tyre. If you do, then probably best to inform the insurance company. There are a few different markings (see link), RFT and ROF are the common ones and BMW approves tyres are marked with a star and not the same as Mercedes run flats. I think Scouse experienced that? Don’t assume anything when it comes to badges, the 118i has a 1.5 3 pot shared with MINI iirc. Run flat markings

Thanks Martin, it's what I had remembered but it's good to have confirmation
It's not my car, in case anyone wondered! My young colleague had a MINI with (I think) a 1.6 petrol, and she reckons the Beemer is a lot nippier/nicer to drive. So far! 118i, as I say, in Mineral Grey (which suits it I think) and my favourite double-five spoke wheels.
Tyre query is because the rears are down to just over 2mm and need changed; an expense she could probably have done without, but obviously wants the best VFM compatible with safety she can get.
I shall give her the news tomorrow!

118i. Yuk. Anyway, she does know it is RWD, doesn't she? For when it snows...

I had a 118i last for a couple of months last year, it’s a cracking little car. The 1.5 3 pot is a lovely smooth motor that pulls well. I was impressed with it.

My experience with runflats is that they're a bit more expensive - £200 each instead of about £160 for similar non-runflats - but, on the 320 at least, they wear incredibly slowly.

Assuming it has 18" tyres, the cheapest tyre I would consider buying is £125, the best (PS4) is £134, cheapest RFT £151 and the Bridgstone is £156. (all fitted).

Had a quick passenger ride in it the other day - much punchier than her MINI, that's for sure!

Where from Martin? I was looking at BlackCircles and they weren't as cheap on there IIRC.
My wheel search found this - I expect all you BMW-ophiles know of it already!

I'd give the RE050 a miss and get the Bridgestone S001 instead - a much superior tyre

A moot point, for the time being anyway; she was hit by an errant Peugeot this afternoon, just near Macklin Motors at the top of Port Dundas Road. Not hurt, only shaken, and the car is driveable, but the front end is a bit of a mess. Gutting, as she only got it a week ago!
