You make it sound like everyone but him knew that from the start?

They have some interesting tech in motors (Electric) and have had quite an impact on miniturising componants but the car was probably always a stretch.
Did anyone see more than a doodle for styling?

Presumably he couldn't make it work for his usual method - use existing tech, make it look nicer and charge a fortune? Ze Chermans are already in that bit of the market for electric cars.

Dyson produced over 5000 prototypes to prove his first bagless vacuum would work after being told it was a pointless exercise because if it would work someone else would have invented it by now. What about his digital motor or his Airblade hand dryer - the world's first hygienic hand dryer? I applaud him for trying to make it work and no doubt some of his tech will be licensed into other manufacturers' products.

When you see the losses that Tesla incurred trying to move into car manufacture when they had no history in it, I don't think it is any surprise to see Dyson look at the costs (incl the 5 or 6 year redesigns) and compare those to the returns he might get and decide that keeping the cash under the bed was a much safer option. I have no doubt that his electric motor boffins might well have found a few golden nuggets that they will be able to sell/licence to others and make a better return than full scale car manufacture.
I am sad to see it happen but not surprised and I think he did the right thing instead of potentially bankrupting himself.

I'm not sure how well a company best known for vacuums and washing machines would fare in the brand obsessed world of car sales. The established makers already have a well known brand and startups like Tesla have the sort of Apple type halo of a Californian tech firm. I don't see where Dyson would fit into that.
