This weeks rental was a 2018 Ford Focus SE. While it’s a 2 year old car that I had the privilege of seeing go over 40,000 miles, it still drove really well- especially for a rental car. The colour was metallic grey, like the gunmetal Ford had years ago and really suited the 5dr body.
Driving it, well, it’s a Focus. It does all the basics well and was easily the best handling normal car I’ve rented this year. The engine was unwilling to move off the line but once going, was nippy, easily doing 85mph without any issues and while returning a steady 35mpg.
It’s been a number of years since I’ve driven one and to be honest, it still feels like the mk1 on the road.
The Sync worked really well and was better than any of the Nissans I’ve had recently and I’d argue it was better than the Hyundai/Kia too.
It was basic. It had no FG and cloth seats which were comfortable on a 4 hr drive in traffic and at motorway speeds, had a reversing camera and automatic lights- not those daft drl lights that everyone uses and forgets the rear lights need to be on too.
Overall, a great basic car that I’d be happy to rent again.

I'm not surprised it feels like a Mk1 Focus, that's what the US Focus remained, wasn't it? I never understood why they didn't stick with the same model as the rest of the world, instead turning the Mk1 into an odd looking thing that was then generations behind.

The one Rodge had was a Mk3, the one that has just been replaced in Europe. I had a 2017 for a few months a couple of years ago. It was an averagely bland car, largely indistinguishable from the Korean competition, without the handling fun of the Mk.1. It had a heated steering wheel though. Which was nice.
