Oh dear. They have managed to do what Ford did when they made the Escort into an Orion instead of what Audi did when they made the A3 into a saloon. Not really pretty is it?
EDIT: the good news is that it looks as though it might come with the 3 litre straight 6.

I don't mind that, certainly not an offence on the eyes like some of their bigger cars.
Presumably it's a hatch which means it's not a true CLA rival. Only car I can think of like it is the i30 Fastback.

Meh, but that's better than the Merc equivalent.

The raised bootlid/slope into the rear window are very reminiscent of the US saloon version of something like the Mondeo.

What a horrible looking car, but then it is a new BMW so that's a given.

Another answer to a question nobody asked. So, is this a saloon version of a coupe version of a hatchback?

The Germans have been doing that for years now, especially BMW.
I know Volvo have done it already, but how are they planning on getting a straight 6 into a transverse FWD platform?

I had also hoped they would base it on the 2-series coupe, not the new 1-series, which is a tedious-looking car with terrible design details.
This is not a GC. It's a spiritual successor to the fugly 3GT.

The more I see of it, the more I think it looks like the Focus saloon and the most recent Impreza saloon/hatch and the back end is just saggy bottom fugly.

It's like someone took Danny DeVito and stuck 4 rings on his chest.

I saw a new A3 saloon from behind the other day and genuinely thought it was an A4 until I got closer.

It's a spiritual successor to the fugly 3GT. Agreed. BMW can't seem to decide if "GC" means saloon with a sloping rear roof or a liftback with a sloping roof. 3 saloon v 4 liftback made sense. But this 2-er is a saloon, (same as the 8 GC is now). So it all makes absolutely no sense at all. Rather than the 4 being an upmarket 3, this just looks like it is aimed at people who want a cheaper 3-er saloon. Or maybe GC just mean frameless windows as the unique design feature? The old 4 GC is now the best looking car that BMW make.

Horrid. Here was an opportunity to make something similar to the size of an E46, and RWD and optional 4WD. We’re told that BMW must make drearier cars to appeal to more people. Different times, but being RWD with mostly six cylinder units never stopped the E46 from selling, nor other BMW’s. Heritage is important.
I'd rather have an I30 N Sportback. That looks genuinely decent, and it sounds rather good, like some sort of quieter WRC car from the outside.
Autocar online have been putting out that article about the M2 Gran Coupe for months, amusingly, the same article, just with different dates every time. Equally for months, it’s been known that the 2 GC will be sitting on the F40’s platform. Perhaps if they stopped being JLR weekly, they would have realised that.
