The thread about BMW service plans got me wondering, has/would anyone haggle on the price a dealership quotes them?
Service work is normally a fairly profitable part of the business (fond memories of buying oil at £2.80 and selling for £12.80 a litre) and a discount is frequently used to secure work to keep the techs busy.
If nothing else, give it a try the next time you get a quote. If they quote £500, ask if they'll do it for £400? Especially if it's common stuff like brakes as the profit margins are normally good on them.

I tried it on last year with our local Fiat dealership, Motor Village in Battersea, after discovering they wanted to charge about £300 to service the 500, as opposed the £165 or so quoted by Parkside Fiat in Hounslow (who had previously serviced the car as they were close to my wife's previous office).
They were uninterested to say the least.
So it now goes to a little Fiat/Alfa specialist in Stockwell where they do it for about £85.

I'll be taking my own oil next time I have a service because the car takes 7 litres and the dealer charges £28 a litre. They use Castrol oil and I can get 7 litres for £72.
