How is this gonna differ from a 6 series coupe? Looks about the same size...

Heavier and more expensive?

Not necessarily heavier, as it's likely to use the carbon core. Very good chance that it will be more expensive, as the 6 series is a 5 series coupe and this is more 7 series. Apparently it leaves room for the 6 Series coupe to be more of a sports car, with this being the luxury coupe in the range.
Hopefully it will be bigger inside than the 6, which is a reverse tardis, a 4 series coupe has more room in the back.

Yeah. It's probably more of an S-Class Coupe rival.

Whilst I would have an S Class Coupe any day, I can't really see the point in this: they could easily make the 6 series a bit bigger inside (it is nearly 5 mtrs long after all!) and they have the M badge to make it more sporty. I reckon the Chairman just wanted a new luxury coupe for himself and this was the easiest way to get it (apart from buying an S Class Coupe which might not sit well in the Boardroom)

It'll be interesting to see what it actually looks like under all that swirly stuff. I do wonder if they'll drop the 6 series 3 door as it seems to be far less popular than the GC.

I would happily have purchased a used 6 series coupe instead of mine and I went to look at one myself and then took the family along for a second look. I prefer its looks to the 4 series as well. The problems were quite simple: the rear seat leg room is about half that in a 4 series coupe and the rear seats don't fold, making it far less practical. As something to sit in as a driver or as a couple it is a wonderful car. As something to carry 4 people about even occasionally or a car which is flexible enough to use when you don't also have an estate or hatchback as well, it fails. I might only need those abilities 15 or 20 times a year but that is more than enough to create serious irritation.

I'm amazed that Mercedes find enough customers to support both the E and S class coupe model lines.

Agreed.
And I'm reasonably confident that this new 8-series won't be a patch on the old one, looks-wise.

the 6 series is the most heavily discounted car in the country.I still have nightmares over how much I lost in 6 months with the m6.

An A8 6.3 Quattro LWB listing at a whisker over £101k, can be yours new for £27k less.
Same for a similarly-stickered S8 Plus.
A common-or-garden S8 can be had new for £60k (down from £84k).

The S8/Plus is a relative bargain, even new.. There is a 6 month old S8 Plus on Autotrader with £5k worth of optional paint, so a list price of £105,000, for £67k and a similar age standard S8 for £52,000.

My bad , I think the article said most discounted not heaviest ,and by most I think it means numbers sold x discount given .

Based on that 1 picture I quite like that. Not overly keen on the grille though. Presumably it hides its bulk well - I'm assuming 5m long and 2,000kg.

That looks even more of a 2 seater than the current one.
Thankfully the test mules don't look quite as in your face as that. Really not sure about those looks.

From the A pillar backwards, with the bulging rear arches, it looks very Aston to me. But that front grille and treatment - eugh!
