So had my first experience of a Velar in Milan the other day, when a colleague gave us a lift in his to get to Monza. It was a supercharged V6 petrol P380 model in what the dash display told me was R Dynamic HSE flavour. Impressions? Great-looking car in a sober dark grey with tasteful alloys, but by God the door handles look ugly when they are sticking out and they are un-premium to touch/operate. Inside, this one had swathes of Union Jack-perforated cream leather and looked all very upmarket and slick. The centre console is very modern and Apple-esque. It’s pretty tight in there though – as five adults, we were pretty squashed. And in the back we were two medium-height thin blokes and a medium-height thin woman, and it was very cosy. You also really notice the low roofline – notwithstanding a panoramic roof, it felt almost a bit “led sled”, like a TT does. Performance-wise, it rode very smoothly and quietly, and clearly had plenty of poke, whisking up to speed with a cultured low snarl and a distinct sense of rear squat. But its owner did note that the only thing he didn’t like was the abysmal fuel consumption. Apparently it uses more fuel than his 991 GT3 RS. But we agreed it made for a very agreeable mode of transport for those with a small family, or no family but the occasional need for practicality.

The Velar is quoted at 2550kg and the GT3RS at 1430kg, the additional 1,120kg would take an awful lot of shifting.

Kerb weight = 1884 kg Max loading weight = 666 kg
Add the two together = gross vehicle weight (I.e, the most it could weigh if you filled it to capacity)

Autocar did test a diesel variant, but the weights reproduced on the website are manufacturers claims, not as tested. JLR's figures seem to be 1-200kgs under 'as tested'. This is not that unusual now, it seems.
EDIT - back of the magazine says 2,089 for the 240PS 4-pot diesel. JLR claims 1,911. As well as 6.8 to 60 as opposed to Autocar's 9.3s.
JLR claims 8.4 to 60 for the lower powered variant, so that must be north of 10s.

Yeah, I thought the Jaguar figures in particular always came back comfortably higher than claimed, as you say though that's in line with the majority of other manufacturers. They certainly don't appear to be making much progress on producing the lighter cars that I think 10 years ago we were told would be coming.

When I first saw a Velar I thought it looked about the same size as an RRS. But now I've seen more of them and stood next to a few, it actually is much smaller than first impressions.

Not just me then. You need to see one parked between an Evoque and an RRS to see which one is the closest relative. Still a desirable car, though.

Can't be that desirable, as I've seen more new shape Evoques than Velars and the latter have been on sale a lot longer. I did see one in Germany and it was being driven by some prick who thought speed limits didn't apply to him, so it's not just here where Rangies are driven by fucking twats.
