I was at PalmerSport yesterday with my wife to let her see what the boys get up to when we are away. We hired this from Europcar at Stansted: I have to say I was pretty impressed with it. It had decent poke (remarkable for 999cc), was quiet and absorbed lumps and bumps exceptionally well whilst at the same time tackled corners with real vigour and capability. The boot was a good size, the seats comfortable, the infotainment system adequate but relatively easy to operate and it handled motorway speeds with ease. I have a small question for those who know the M11 - is there a reason why 90% of people drive at 60/65 when I am so used to English motorways travelling at about 80mph? The only negative was the apparent economy. The car was supposedly delivered with a full tank and I certainly handed it back with one but working out the mpg on how much fuel I put in, brings out economy of c36mpg. If it was perhaps a gallon short when we got it, that would bring the economy up closer to 50mpg which is good regardless. The engine was very smooth and didn't sound too course as the revs built up and the gearchange was smooth and slick. However standing outside with the engine running it did sound a bit diesel like although the slight rattle at tickover disappeared when the clutch was depressed so it may just be a release bearing issue. For anyone looking for a small family car, I'd certainly check out the very capable Focus.

I think the M11 has speed averaging cameras along it - I'll be on it myself later so I'll see if it's the same. Haven't these got an inbuilt speed limiter device and if so did you use it?

Interesting. One of my mates had a 63 plate 1.0 Focus with, I think, 125BHP and I was very impressed with it. He always reckoned to be getting 50+ mpg from it too while not exactly hanging about.
Sounds like the ride and handling are similar with this one as well.

There was nothing to say it had average speed cameras and I didn't see any of those yellow contraptions. The car might have had a speed limiter but I didn't explore that far but my cruise control was set at 73mph which according to the Garmin Satnav was 70mph. I might have strayed a few mph above that to remove myself from dangerous situations I saw evolving.

If I am really, really lucky with traffic and long journeys on dual carriageways or motorways I can just about squeeze an indicated 50mpg out of the Fiesta (1.0 100bhp) but more usually it's in the region of 46 to 48. I've had a few new shape Fiestas as loan cars and they have had 6 speed boxes rather that the 5-speed fitted to mine, yet I have got worse mpg out of them, even on motorway runs, than I get from my own car

My local dealer has an orange Focus outside which I presume is a new ST? Apart from the red brake calipers it looks just like all the other ones there.

The M11 was moving along very nicely last night!

He does do a reasonable amount of motorway running but at the time he had the Focus his commute was Broughty Ferry into west Central Dundee, albeit he did that before the worst of the rush hour started. The Focus 125 had a 6 speed box.

Couple of sections of the A12 are now average-speed camera but the M11 remains ok.

Typical Ford blend of supple surefootedness. My only real beefs are that the seats are too wide and flat, and the steering, though accurate, is too light. There is some feel, at least. Overall a very good car indeed, but the Fiesta is more fun.

I've tried the 1.0 with 100bhp in both the Fiesta and Focus . It was brilliant in the Fiesta, but felt it didn't quite work as well in the Focus. I imagine the 125hp one is much better
