... on Smart motorways. I recently saw an article saying how fines for driving in lanes identified by the red "X" would be increased, more awareness of its meaning needed etc etc.
Earlier this week on my way home there had been an accident on the smart part of the M3 near where I leave. I was already in the left-most lane of 4 and the right-most lane was marked by a red "x" on at least 2 overhead gantries before I turned off. There was very little effect, a near-continual stream of cars in this closed lane almost until the cones and blue "keep left" arrow pop-up sign were in the lane.
Of course not enough Police in attendance to flag down the offenders and issue tickets, or will that have been done automatically using the ANPR cameras more usually employed for catching speeding motorists?

I used to regularly see signs referring to the 'Red X' (i think the message was something like 'obey the red X') in the Paisley area of the M8 on trips home when we lived on the Island of Doom but never understood what it was actually for.
This was usually on a Sunday evening when the roads were fairly quiet and there were certainly never any accidents or roadworks.

The rule is that you do not proceed past the red X in that lane. But, as usual, numpties abound, and just carry on like the utter fucktards they are. Chances are cameras will nab them.
