Work trip, so booked through the central team via Avis. We’d booked a ‘large SUV Automatic’ with Hertz but there was an issue with the booking so the travel company changed it to Avis. They offered us a Q3, but would be cosy for 3 x 6’+ blokes and I’ve been a passenger in my HR managers one and didn’t like it. Option B was an Espace, which is far more interesting and although we were staying in Basel, we were in France for The Tour so I wanted something French. I know big MPVs aren’t popular, but they make so much more sense for families than an SUV. Huge boot, 7 seats, 3 seats all the same size in the middle row with plenty of room for adults and a great view out for everyone. Although the ‘Zen’ is the base model, spec was good (some might be options) with part leather, HUD, keyless, heated rear seats, CarPlay etc. Quality was OK, didn’t have high expectations but it was fine and importantly for a family bus, it felt fairly robust. Surprisingly it was a petrol, the 225hp 1.8, but I think half of them were asleep because it gathered speed rather than accelerated. The ride was excellent around town (18” wheels) and on the motorway, the only criticism I’ve got is the steering felt very light and it wandered a bit at 130kmh. Could have been the tyre pressures? I only grabbed one picture, my colleagues think I’m a big enough car geek as it is.....

The Tour was good, decent hospitality and a good atmosphere. Great views from the top of the stage.

Quite. I'd love to go to a proper Alpes or Pyrenees stage.
The Espace is a bit of guilty pleasure, I think the Renault MPV's are a cracking design.

I didn't even know they still made the Espace. Mind you, most of the people carrier crowd have moved onto posh roaders now, so there are fewer about. Couldn't move for the things 15 years ago.

How do you get a work trip to the Tour de France? We do all the logistics for the event and are a sponsor, so have hospitality at a lot of the stages, this one was a shared facility as it’s less popular (location). I went with the head of commercial from my customer and my boss. Unlike previous customers, they’re allowed hospitality and really enjoy it, so I’ve been able to go to the races a couple of time plus Wimbledon and some football games in the year I’ve been running their operations.
