I haven't done anything about the 320 yet - its parked on the drive in disgrace, probably until next week at the earliest - but I feel like the recent issue with the transfer gears might bring our relationship to an early finish.
So, assuming I get a reasonable amount for it (despite it being a diesel with 112k miles on the clock and therefore, probably, death in residual circles) what should I get to replace it?
I'm thinking of putting a measly £1k and £300/month towards something on a 12k mile a year PCP.
Just for info I've been casting glances in the direction of the new Fiesta ST but haven't actually been near one at all yet.

You might want to look here: www.autoexpress.co.uk/best-cars/96619/best-car-leasing-dealsI also have a contact who deals with all kinds of leasing: mostly just straight lease but he can also do PCP and HP. He can access all makes and can tell you what cars are on special at the time - that can make a massive difference to the monthlies if the manufacturer has just discounted a particular model. PM me if you want his contact details.

£300/month seems a decent PCP budget, provided you find someone offering decent APR.

There are only a few stock cars left in the M140i but there are fantastic deals to be had. Eastern BMW in Edinburgh were sending me e-mails last week about one they had.

As far as I understand it your BMW is fine to drive but will just be RWD for the moment.

I don't think a 140i or Fiesta ST will have the load-carrying capabilities of the 320, or isn't that important in view of the Alphard?

Thanks guys.
John, yes please send the details through, I'll not be doing anything immediately but I think it'll be in the next few weeks.
Racing, not sure I can stomach a 1 series!!
Bob, I think the car is currently still 4wd but when it does the hesitation it's skipping across the gear splines on part of the drive in the transfer box (the bit appears to be under £150!!), however there do appear to be tales of the transfer case itself letting go - presumably if you ignore it for too long. Even if it lost drive then knowing my luck that would happen halfway across the Tay Bridge at rush hour......
Chris, you're sort of right although I don't want to start putting dirty crap in there since we'll also be sleeping in it. It does, however have a towbar and a mate has a trailer (plus he's got a towbar fitted to his car and foolishly offered to supply the whole combo if I need anything taken to the dump!).
I think I've been missing the commute in the 370 so I need something day to day sporty back in my life, hence the Fiesta.

^ Just been reading (during my lunch break) Autocar's long-term test summary on their Fiesta ST (I'm a little behind with my mag reading) and they really rate it

I think they all do, John Barker in EVO seemed to really love it.
I'd need to get a decent test drive though as the roads round here are terrible.

^ Now you tell us (about the roads) ! I've used the last of my Avios up on a flight to Aberdeen (and hotel) for the b/hol weekend and aim to drive down to Dundee on the Saturday to visit the V&A and Discovery and Verdant museum if time and weather permit

You'll be fine on the main roads, Chris, it's the backroads that are generally awful.

I'm waiting to try out the new Aberdeen bypass, and to see what BA are giving away to celebrate their "false" 100 year anniversary. Saturday dinner is planned for the Chinese in Forfar........ :-)

The new bypass is great, gets you to the airport and hotels far quicker than when you had to trawl round Anderson Drive.

The new bypass is great, gets you to the airport and hotels far quicker than when you had to trawl round Anderson Drive. I'll be arriving very late and will be going round the Parkway to the NE of the city to my hotel. Am also interested to see what the "Hyundai i30 or equivalent" turns out to be.... was going to try the cheaper "Citroen Cactus C4 or equivalent" except I then found out that one of the "equivalents" was a Skoda Fabia, which immediately struck me as being somewhat smaller
