Tina's car insurance re-newal has just come through, it's jumped from £42 pm to £52 pm, with the addition now of 1 years NCB (insurance was always in my name, however when she started using her car for work with her new job a year ago, it had to be in her name as for some reason the insurer wouldn't allow me on there when there are business miles, something to do with me being in the motortrade).
A bit of searching, upping the miles and adding me on, I have found it elsewhere for the same level of cover for £32 pm.
Doing the annual insurance renewal dance (just done it for home contents too and saved a not inconsiderable amount), is a pain but it pays to do it, I wonder how many people don't though.

We're in the middle of some decorating. I went to get a tin of paint that was a couple of years old from the garage. Took the lid off, stirred it, picked up the brush and went up the stepladder. As I stated to paint I thought "what's that sploshing noise I can hear and why does my leg feel wet?" The bloody tin had only sprung a leak - right where the side joins the bottom. It was a 2.5 litre tin - a goodly amount was now down my leg, over my boots, all over the step ladder and and on the floor. Fuck! The only way I could stop it was to quickly put the lid on and turn the tin upside down. What a mess - it took ages to clear up and thank goodness we are having a new carpet in that room after we paint it.

I stopped keeping paint in the garage after that long cold spell in 2010 cost me 2 tins of masonry paint - freezing temperatures are not good for paint!

The smallest star yet found was recently located - about the size of Saturn, but around 85 times more massive than Jupiter - close to what they theoretically think is the lower limit of about 83x. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBLM_J0555-57

So much for being shut down. Oh well.

Finally remembered to buy my tickets for Southport Airshow!
I'd feel a bit silly going all that way and not be able to get near the flight line!

I've just added the last couple of fill ups to Fuelly and I've passed a milestone..... £10,000 spent on diesel. That's for just under 76,000 miles over 34 months and is on top of the £5,000 spent on Petrol over the same period.

About the same distance as me in 127 months! Its less than than I expected / planned to do when I got the car. It should have been on 85k by now, but my business miles were a bit lower in the first 2 years and I used the Boxster more than I thought I would. It's done 29,500 miles in the last 12 months, the Boxster has done 9,800.

Wonky rear numberplates on Audis. Once you start noticing them you can't stop. And it always seems to be Audis more than any other brand. Even on new ones - can no dealerships employ anyone who can stick one on straight? What's the VAG part number for a spirit level?

Younger daughter was home for the B/H weekend and I treated her A1 to a proper wash and clean of the alloys with wheel cleaner..... The paintwork is remarkable - just a couple of small stonechips to touch in on the front bumper, all of the marks in other places came off with gentle rubbing of a chamois or dry fabric cloth... not even any chips on the edge of the driver's door and she's kept the interior reasonably clean too ! No sign of any parking dings either (fingers crossed.....) The huge holes in the spokes of the 18" alloys means that they are easy to clean on the inner surface.... front tyres looking a bit worse for wear but not in imminent need of changing yet (and at around £140 each, thank goodness for that), they'd not even dropped any pressure from the day of purchase (checked using my same footpump). I did find, however, that the car has seen paint in its short lifetime as I found a slightly ragged masking taped line on the offside rear wing at its rearmost edge... and first ever failure of a previous owner to respond the the "enquiry letter plus SAE" that I sent them 3 months ago.... 3 months already? Where's the time gone?
One downside is that daughter has not found a way for anyone to open the tailgate from the outside - when dropping someone off who needs to extract luggage, other than turning the engine off and getting out, walking round to the rear of the car and using the remote on the key to open the tailgate.
Car is now 3 1/2 years old and still has under 10k on the clock, and she's well pleased with it

Can't she just press it with the key in the ignition and the engine still running? I'm sure that works on my 3 series which also has a tailgate release button down by your right calf, above the bonnet release.

The Legacy passed it's 7th MOT today, with advisories for front tyres (I know), lower rear front bushes (I know) and "scored & pitted rear discs" (didn't know, but suspected - they're not too bad at all). Also told me the front linkage for the so-called self-levelling had snapped from the cross member - I told them that when I dropped the car off this morning! Somewhat fortunately, I suppose, the lights were sitting correctly which is how it passed I suppose. What the dealer and MOT guy missed - but Hypertech, the folk that have done my exhaust, bushes etc in the past couple of years didn't - was the leaking centre diff support bush, but did pick up on leaking sump and a/t tray, which are actually fine! Oh, and the non-leaking star-shaped crack in the very bottom n/s corner of the windscreen has been missed for the 3rd year in a row!! It's not a problem, but I thought they were supposed to spot things like that?! Ho hum.

Along the lines of: "Dear Mrs X, I believe you are the previous owner of an Audi A1, reg...... which my daughter and I have just purchased from..... As there is a lot of fraud connected with car sales, I wonder if you would mind answering a few questions about the car; I have enclosed a piece of paper and an SAE for you to use. Did you have any problems with the car? is the mileage genuine at about 8100? etc etc Thank you in advance for your help" It's worked before and I have had some charming replies, but in this case, zilch

The fraud element hints at potentially getting involved in something that is no longer anything to do with me and, of course, if the vehicle had been problematical or there was any issues with the mileage I wouldn't reply either incase of any comeback. Once the vehicle has been sold privately or to a dealer that's that, I don't want anything more to do with it.

Just been on the DVLA website to tax the Qashqai for another year. Cost £0.00. Feels like a small victory even though I know they'll get it back somewhere else.

I sent a letter to the previous owner of the ZT260, asking for any documents relating to servicing, parts purchases, etc. as it only had the service book. It's nice to have a file of invoices with a car like that. He never replied but it was worth a try. I wouldn't do it for anything other than a slightly more "special" car or a classic.

What would you like it to be?
In theory I could have driven home, then as long as I only drove 10 miles in the next 16 months it wouldn't need a service until Jan 2109 and I'd have enough miles left to get back to the garage.

Returned to work today after the week's holiday... apparently Richard Branson made contact to the outside world from his flattened Necker Island using the satellite phone connection built into the device we make at work, as it was the only battery-powered means of communicating from there after the devastation.
We have an eclectic band of customers that is rumoured to include Branson, Bill Gates, one of the founders of Google, Philip Green, Air Force One.....
