.... how much has Argos saved by shutting the standalone stores? The answer is it’s made the group more profitable..... ... and that's one of the big "problems" with large organisations, it's all about chasing profits and not providing a good experience for the consumer. OK so shopping (and our way of life) has changed but I'm not convinced that it's for the better and I'm clearly in a dying breed. Shopping isn't how I'd want it to be, nobody makes a new car that appeals to me anymore, air travel is all about lowest cost and not providing a decent service (BA, are you listening?) etc etc

I’m happy with how easy shopping is these days, I really don’t like visiting shops of any kind, particularly supermarkets. Lindsay orders the weekly basics online and delivered, then tops up at the local grocer and butcher in the week. BA service has been pretty poor for years, but there are airlines that give great service on long haul flights.

Argos has always been a funny store for me; I would never normally think to buy anything from them but, occasionally, they are useful in an emergency and I appreciate the fact they’re a mile away at my local Sainsbury’s, not in town. Their logistics seem to be very good as they’ve never been unable to supply what I want.

They have good geographical spread of stores with good stockholding and they feed stock for orders into the small stores, using the same vans that make the home deliveries. That’s been in place for nearly 9 years (I was involved in the project)

I find Argos excellent for the rapid delivery or collection of something I need quickly, with no messing about. They always seem to have what I want in stock, which is unusual these days.
My pressure washer came from there last week.

I just received my W2 form (yearly tax form) from my job in California. I’m out of there 15 months now but still got commission into last year. It arrived at my house in Ireland with an incomplete post code and no country on the address. Either Uncle Sam badly wants his taxes or the company weren’t keen to get the paperwork to me!

I love Patterdale and the surrounding area. It's a great jumping off spot for Helvellyn. I've stayed at The Inn on the Lake a couple of times and it's lovely - we had a room with views right up Ullswater.

Bloody pub is shut, allegedly due to lack of beer, which is annoying.
Travellers Rest in Glenridding got our business instead and we are heading off to Grasmere for food tonight.
I see the Inn on the Lake has an informal pub type of bar so may have a look at that tomorrow.

When we went camping over there we went to The Brackenrigg Inn, up the A592, heading North towards Pooley Bridge. It's on the left hand side just past the Fairfeld Marina. Good pub and food.

It was pretty windy yesterday evening. I was standing in the kitchen at 6:30 chatting to Mrs Tim as she made dinner and there were the usual noises - clacking from the extractor flap when the wind gusted, the occasional chatter from the tiles as they lifted slightly. Then suddenly there was a mild thump and the clear sound of a tile sliding down the roof. Irritating I thought, especially as it happened again a couple of minutes later. As the gusts seemed to be getting stronger it seemed like a good idea to move the cars further from the house and upwind (wind can make tiles do odd things when they blow off - in storm Arwen one tile, on the sheltered side of the roof, blew 30 feet and at right angles to the wind direction) and also have a quick scan to see how bad the roof was. From a safe distance of course. So from about 25 yards away I pointed the torch at the relevant bit of roof, no obvious signs of missing tiles. Something in the gutter at the bottom of the valley where the roofs join at right angles caught my eye. It was a pheasant. The stupid bastard had clearly been on the roof, slid down and then (maybe) enjoyed it so much it did it again.
What a relief!

A decent result. Peasants, about as smart as roof tiles on the best of days.

I have pretty much tuned out of radio 2 apart from the Sounds of 60's, 70's and 80's programmes which are good on a journey. I really can't stand Zoe or Sara Cox.
I now listen to Chris Evans on Virgin in the morning and Graham Norton on Saturday and Sunday mornings. After that I listen to Greatest Hits radio with Simon Mayo (drive time going home), Richard Allinson and Alex Lester, all soon to be joined by Uncle Ken in a couple of months.
Radio 2 have done to their audience what Radio 1 did about 25 years ago and got rid of their audience without providing an alternative. What they have failed to grasp is that the under 25's basically don't listen to radio, they stream everything. It's the over 30's who listen and in great BBC style they have shown they understand f*** all about their audience.

We stream radio via Sonos at home during the day. Lindsey defaults to Radio 2, but I can't stand it any more.
I've never liked Zoe Ball, Ken Bruce is great, Jeremy Vine is a Cunt, Scott Mills is anasthesia and Sara Cox grates on the nerves.
Sorry Bryan, but weekend Radio 2 is aimed at octogenarians from what I've listened to.
I listen to Spotify in the car so I don't get annoyed.

...I've never liked Zoe Ball, Ken Bruce is great, Jeremy Vine is a Cunt, Scott Mills is anasthesia and Sara Cox grates on the nerves. Pretty much agree with that. The only bit of Ken Bruce I can't stand is when people, get their "30 seconds to say hellos" after Pop-master. Some people have a list for crying out loud!! Plus R2 they seem to be playing more and more music aimed at their mythical 25 year old audience. Which the rest of the potential audience can't abide. Thus, I find R2 hard to listen to now. I'm trying Greatest Hits and I like the music and presenters, but the adverts are annoying. And the awful 3.30-ish daily prize give away - I mean WTF is that all about? They could ring the winner, give them the "you've won" and be off the air in 30 secionds, but no they have to dwell on and on.

Absolute radio for me . Great in the mornings with the Dave berry breakfast show , and also drive time with bush and Ritchie . The tunes are always good too
I do occasionally flick through to radio x , heart dance , capital dance , and if there’s a sporting event on then it’s obviously talksport/5 live

Car company names. What on earth is going on? First, according their TV adverts, Hyundai want to be pronounced in some wanky un-English way. And today on Greatest Hits I heard an advert for "Shkoda". And it wasn't a mistake as the lady said it about four times. What's wring with Skoda? Thinking about this a bit more, I sense that there is some general trend to try to make us pronounce foreign words in some local dialect as if we were from that country, as if not to do that is insulting the other country / [place / language. Me, I take the view that we're English speaking and we should pronounce stuff as it would sound were it an English word. Not to insult people, but that's the only way tyou can assimilate new words / places into your own language. Like when did Kyiv become Keeve? Maybe this should be in rants?
