I've just had to take the first unscheduled trip to a BMW garage since I got the first 5 back in 2009. OK, the 520d did lunch a turbo at 120k miles, but up to now that's the only issue I've had, not even a rattle or squeak.
A couple of weeks ago I spotted some oil on the drive, not a large amount, just a couple of drops. I didn't think it would be the 7, but I checked at the hotel a few days later and the same pattern of drops were there. I checked the oil and it asked for 1 litre, which isn't much more than I'd expect to put in as it's 15k miles since the last service/oil change, so not a big leak. I booked it in for this morning as I can work from home and after having a good look at it, they've decided it's coming from somewhere around the turbo, which is located in the V of the engine. Not a quick job, so they need it for a couple of days to strip that part of the engine down and find out where it's coming from and what needs replacing. "You'll be pleased it's still under warranty' was the cheery greeting from the service rep.
Clearly not a breakdown (non or otherwise!) and thanks to them letting me know quickly and getting me straight in a car which I can keep until Saturday (my next opportunity to get to Bedford), not a lot of hassle, but my expectation is zero hassle so it's failed.

Tsk.
What have they given you as a loaner?

I imagine half the time will be spent finding the engine under all the plastic covers. A car of that age shouldn’t be getting oil leaks so it is disappointing but they’ve seen you quickly and given you a decent loan car rather than a boggo 1 series so there’s not much more the dealer could do.

I agree, they've done everything you'd expect so far without having to be pushed.

Ouch! Sounds terminal, better get rid!

Ouch! Sounds terminal, better get rid! I usually don't need much of an excuse to think about the next car, but there's nothing I'd want to replace it with under £100k. Due to my mileage, that's stretching my man maths skills beyond breaking point!

On a positive note, I'll be covering 600 miles in the next 4 days, so that's a bit less depreciation and wear & tear on the 750

It'll be interesting to see what sort of economy the X5 returns.

Assume it's some sort of 3.0 diesel?

Assume it's some sort of 3.0 diesel? Yes (there's a test drive thread if you're bored at work), it's the 30d, so 265hp and 0-62 in 6.5 seconds. Thanks to a combination of fakery and optional sports exhaust, it sounds like a V8 diesel rather than straight 6.

I wonder how much that would cost out of warranty?!

I wonder how much that would cost out of warranty?! Several hundred £ just to find the leak I suspect, then it depends what the issue is. I’d never run it without a warranty.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of economy the X5 returns. 39.8mpg on a 160 mile mainly motorway journey with very little traffic. The 750 will do 43-44 in the same route. As I’d get 14p per mile in a 3.0 diesel vs 22p in a petrol over 2 litre, running the X5 would cost me £1600 a year more than the 750.

That's madness.

This just goes to show the folly of running a tall, heavy SUV as a motorway car instead of something better suited to the purpose.

Mmmmmnnnn....should I be concerned that the GPS positioning has been switched off?!
Was curious for some reason so looked on the app. I know it was locked at 10:42 this morning and the current mileage, but I didn’t make a record of what it was when I dropped it off, so would have to try and work it out from the last fill up.

Undergoing a large job like that, the first thing on the list would be disconnect the battery.

I get that, but in the App it has everything activated other than the GPS. Maybe that is what happens when the battery is disconnected.
Thanks, feel happier now. But will still check the mileage!

GPS still switched off, but it’s parked up with the bonnet, boot and all the windows open..... Tried to get an update this afternoon, still being assessed was the answer then someone was supposed to call me back with a proper update but no call.

Just had an update, the leak was coming from the oil feed pipe to the turbos. Pipe replaced but it needs a clip which they don’t have in stock, so they have had to order it from Germany. The system says it’s been despatched but it hasn’t arrived yet, so a few more days in the X5. If it isn’t sorted on Monday it will be another week, as I’m flying to Switzerland on Wednesday for a work trip to watch the TDF (over the border....).
