Apart from it being black, all sounds good and the 20" wheels look fine, it's the 18s/19s that look small. Doesn't the HSE get a better quality of leather and cooled seats as well? Probably a good thing that it's in stock otherwise you'd easily end up pushing the cost way higher by adding leather dash, air suspension etc. Have you driven one? One thing that you might not expect coming from a BMW is that it has a SIM built in that covers most things but I'm fairly sure it will need a separate SIM for live traffic and software updates. You can tether the car to your phone, but my phone doesn't always let a device connect first time, so I bought a Three Data SIM from Amazon, by far the cheapest way of doing it. I think some dealers give you a free SIM for 3 months, but I'd ditch that when it runs out. My wife dislikes red cars and thought the blue was too bright so really no choice there. We drove the i-pace at Knockhill and again on the surrounding roads about 20 months ago. It was very impressive in lots of ways and we both liked it. I will look into the SIM situation when we get it or if the delivery driver is switched on he might be able to help. Speccing an HSE with the air suspension, leather dash and a few other bits puts the car into a different leasing price bracket completely and even with tax relief, I'm not paying that much under any circumstances.

If you need InControl support then I've pretty much got it figured out now. It's not difficult and works pretty well, but when you're so used to one manufacturers way of doing things it does take a bit of adjustment.

Exciting times. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with this, particularly if you charge it away from home. Do you have solar panels?

No solar panels although it is something we have talked about. Charging away from home is going to be something of a baptism of fire I fear and reading up about all the different cards and apps you need does little to subdue the concern. I reckon that travelling long distances could take me back in time 25 years when you needed to view a map and plan ahead. One good thing is that the shopping centres we visit most often have great big parking spaces near the door for electric cars and some have free charging.

Having been in one given the beans from a standing start and being astonished by it, it do amuse me that my car is actually a tiny bit quicker!

Not that I'm ever likely to be in the market for another expensive (for me) car, but I quite like the look of these (for what they are!) and would love it to work out well.

I think for day to day driving it is going to be brilliant. It's the longer trips that might give us an issue. We are going to go down to Harrogate next Spring (fingers crossed Covid is sorted by then) so we will find out just how easy it is to live with and how many coffees we will need to drink to give it time to charge and allow the next leg of the journey to be completed.

Great work John - the first electric car I have had a genuine "want" for personally.
It will be interesting to see how you and Martin get on in the quality/reliability stakes....

Personally I'd have gone for the blue, I think it's a great colour. But I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on, both in day to day use and longer journeys. Can you imagine an i-Pace with access to the Tesla supercharger network..... perfection (in an EV sense, that is).

I did google to see if it was possible and some American site said you could get an adaptor to fit a Tesla charger into other cars. I can't find any adaptor for sale and given how touchy Tesla can be, I am sure the adaptor would be designed to convert it into a 24hr trickle charge. EDIT: Re the blue, that would also have been my choice but Susan felt that two bright blue cars was a bit much.

I like the iPace, they've done something different with the style whereas the Prius or Teslas look very much like a normal car and in the Tesla's case I think a very bland car.
It's one of those vehicles that looks as if it's going fast even when stationary.

What a depressing read, all that time and hassle for just over 300 miles. As has been said plenty of times, you’d need some serious patience to run one as an only car, way more than I have. I did a 260 mile return journey today, no stops, no charger at my destination, only took 4.5 hours and I had 140 mile range when I got home despite the car having done just over 100 miles since filling up when I left home. I know that’s not an issue for Mrs John, I was thinking more about my colleague who’s just got one as a company car. Having said all that, I’d find a way to make a Taycan work and the new Polestar 2 is getting some good reviews, one of the better looking pure EVs as well.

13 hours to do 328 miles! My car will do that on one fill easily, can be driven like the blue car whilst doing it and even if I did manage to run out of juice it's 5 mins in a petrol station and on me way again. If I averaged 40 mph I'd save 5 hours by upsetting Greta. Perfick!

I'd have an electric car all day long to do the daily commute of 30 miles total. No way would I consider an electric car as my only means of transport but its a brilliant partner to the M5. Potentially a Tesla would get the vote as they've got the infrastructure licked. The thought of spending an hour and a half at some minging motorway services makes me shiver. They appear to be the home of Neanderthals, OAP's and shell suit wearers.

Talking of Neanderthals, I once saw some tattooed knuckledragger park his fossil fuelled pick up in an electric charging spot at a motorway services. What chance do you have with fuckwits like that about?!

Some of the hotels I stay at have electric charging points and as they are usually close to the building, they’re blocked by a normal car most of the time.

That's what they do at the services, too, so lazy thugs who are happy to get into a fight over it park there to save themselves the walk.

Sounds similar to those who park in parent and child spaces at supermarkets as they're usually the closest to the doors

Potentially a Tesla would get the vote as they've got the infrastructure licked. This seems to be pretty much where the market is. I'd have seriously considered an i-Pace if I was still commuting 60 miles each way to Birmingham. But as a long distance BEV, only a Tesla can really work at the moment.

We would replace the 500 with a small electric car for local usage but keep the main car petrol-powered for now. Or hybrid, if there was one I actually wanted.

Child seat in the back but no kid in it. The perfect ruse for lazy fuckers, buy a second hand kiddy seat from eBay, whack it in your car and park where you like. It's only when you're getting in or out of the car that you can be caught out!

Fiat are bringing out an electric 500 which seems a good idea for people like you who use it for short trips in town. I imagine it will have a range of about 100 miles max despite the advertised 199 but they also reckon itll do 30 miles from a 5 minute fast charge and that's probably fine for a lot of people who use a second car for trips the shops etc. The problem is more likely to be the initial cost. It starts at £30k which is a lot for a 500 even if electricity is cheaper than petrol

There's no way we'd buy an electric 500 new. The price is absurd!

Had a very brief squizz at the electric Corsa today. I quite like the fact that Vauxhall made it look exactly the same as the ICE version from the outside.

I don't know which dealer group the leasing company are using to supply the I-Pace (I suspect it might be Lookers) but we are now on our 3rd anticipated delivery date with the square root of f all communication from the dealer when the delivery date approaches and passes. I have advised the leasing company a couple of times that they can't just turn up with the car unannounced and since I have no note of the registration number, I cannot insure it so I won't accept delivery unless I get some advance notice. The next anticipated date is Friday which gives real insurance issues if it is late in the day. If the car is coming from Taggarts (our local Jaguar dealer and part of the Lookers Group) it just confirms the crap service all my clients have spoken about over the years.
