Bog standard is one way to keep the price down.

I'd definitely spend a little extra on the colour.

£1,200 for some stitching on the seats? It includes full leather, don’t spec it and you end up with a plastic dashboard which Porsche don’t do particularly well.

You want not conservative? This is my Italian counterpart’s GT3 RS:

Somewhat incredibly he also has a new 991 Speedster in the very same colour. Just sent me a video of it earlier this week.

Why would you add the smoking package? It puts a lid on an otherwise uncovered part of the centre console. Tidies it up, looks sleeker. Nothing to do with actually smoking! This option used to be free. it still was free when I specced my current GT4. Edit: you can see the difference clearly if you look at the interior shots of Ed's 'fully loaded' spec

It doesn’t even have climate control as standard, nor quite a few other things you’d get on a mid range hatchback (rain sensor, dimming mirrors etc). But it does have a rather special engine and chassis! One thing that should be standard are decent headlights, it gets the low power xenons which isn’t good enough.

Interesting. Chris has spent his option money on paint and ceramics, whereas I've spent it on seats, sounds and trinketry. The final costs of each of our GT4s are pretty similar!

^ Paint - only because the standard colours are crap and even then, i am not totally happy with my colour choice, but it's the least worst of all the choices IMHO

FFS it’s a performance car not an s-class. Truth be told at 85 grand once you’ve added a few options it’s still a bargain

It may be a performance car but no doubt most will still be driven on the roads too, and cruise control is so useful

My current GT4 doesn't have cruise control and I didn't consider speccing it, nor on the previous Cayman I owned. The only reason why I would spec it on a new one is because of the massively increased proliferation of average speed cameras /smart motorways since I bought the last one. The direction of travel for this trend is sadly only going one way. My M3 has cruise as standard and I only ever use it on an average speed camera section or smart motorway, or very occasionally to play Cruise Control Chicken

I did wonder as I couldn’t imagine you ever being a smoker.

You'll wear that record out if you keep playing it as often as you do.

It's all "if's"...... If I could afford an M5, I'd be able to afford to pay someone to move furniture, fence panels etc around

Admittedly you can get pretty good quality wraps these days to change the colour of a car, but not being able to have a car in a colour I like is a leading annoyance for me.
It’s even worse with interiors. It’s one of the things I don’t like about fast Audis - typically you had black seats or black seats, or possibly paedo-shoe grey, and silver trim or silver trim, or possibly piano black or carbonfibre. I don’t want the inside of my car to have a colour scheme from a 1990s stack-system.
BMW at least usually offers a decent range of options.

Well I know Audi does as well through their "Exclusive" options, because my father likes his cars to be a sort of dark metallic Barbour green colour with a sort of rich dark chocolate leather interior with walnut trimmings, which requires a full-on assault of the Exclusive options list, but that also costs a fortune. I like that BMW gives you the option without having to raid their "Individual" options. This is the only pic I can find but you get a vague idea of the colour:
