Old flail had to be delivered.
The buyer turned up with a pig trailer and there was no way that the mower was going in.
I borrowed a loader and put it in my flat bed trailer to drop it off on the way to collect my new mower for an extra charge, of course.
I'm happy with the new mower. It cuts well, especially considering how wet it is at the moment. I need to lower the skids and roller as it is scalping and the PTO shaft needs an inch taking off it as it is a bit tight when raising the linkage (Leyland tractors have quite short link arms). I'll sort that tomorrow weather depending.
I got a discount off the advertised price so it was £1,380 all in less the £2,250 and £40 delivery for my old one.

I'm very happy with the new one. I've lowered the skids to their medium setting and lowered the roller so it is the same height. I had to remove 2 inches from the PTO shaft so there was still 3/4" inch to go at its shortest point which is the specs in the manual for the shaft. Considering how wet it has been, it has done a great job. The tractor was quite happy at PTO revs and is plenty powerful enough. I've also fitted new stabiliser eye bolts where they join the tractor axle as they were severely worn and the linkage had too much slop in it. The adjuster nuts were seized, but I freed them off with heat and plenty of WD40. Threads are now clean and copper greased.

I'm liking all the attachments. I think I'll need a tractor for the next place.

That does look more fun and satisfying than pushing my electric mower around.

I was quite happy trundling around the fields. I now need some more red diesel!

I had to replace the gearbox on our McConnel topper last year - it was Chinese and had lasted about 6 years. Mind you I can't help thinking that it was dodgy form the word go. The new gearbox makes about 10% of the noise of the old one.

I'm surprised McConnell use Chinese gearboxes. I would have thought they would have a Comer.
It was a toss up between the flail and a Fleming 6ft rotary, but the flail suits me better.

I'm pretty sure that it was a Comer gearbox - but apparently they are made in China now.

Comer do manufacture some products in China and India, but still manufacture the quality items in Europe.

We use the ultra top of the range Comer gearboxes, but it is difficult when you have to convince a farmer that all Comer gearboxes are not the same.
Having said that, if it says Comer on the gearbox, you really can't go wrong.

Did some much needed maintenance today. The brakes were terrible - the left brake snatched very badly and the right brake barely worked at all. I know this is a Leyland trait and also that of many tractors of this era with dry disc brakes. Anyway, I stripped them down and replaced the ball bearings and return springs in the actuators and adjusted them up. The right brake had a linkage turnbuckle which was massively out of adjustment so I evened this up to match the other side. Both pedals have the same free play and return to the same place. Excellent. I replaced the pedal return springs too which will help a great deal and will stop the brakes riding on.
I also took the opportunity to adjust the diff lock linkage which was a touch long and repair the PTO clutch foot pedal and hand lever. The hand lever worked fine, but the spring that locks the ratchet had snapped. The linkage for the pedal had broken so I installed a new one which I had ordered with the brake friction discs.

Been a while. I mentioned in rants that the tractor blew up on the mower. Smoking gun well and truly found. Rebuild kit arrived yesterday which consists of a new set of pistons and liners. I'm just waiting on the liner removal tool to get cracking.

Had to order a liner puller. New liners installed. Great news is that the old liners weren't corroded which means the old girls hasn't been run without coolant. The new liners required height setting. The kit came with 1 full set of shims which was just enough to set the stand off and difference between adjacent liners correctly. I've got the pistons installed today after my reamer kit arrived. Just got to build the bottom end back up, time it to the rest of the engine and put the head back on.

Yeah, that sounds like a piece of piss, something I'd knock out in my tea break. First proper engine rebuild for me so the learning curve has been steep, but an old pushrod engine is incredibly easy to work on.

Bottom end is back together and I've timed up the oil pump and balancer assembly. Just waiting on a couple of oil seals that were missing from the kit to enable me to but the rear bracket and sump back on.
I've got four sets of new main bearing shells installed. I'm leaving the rear main alone as it requires the tractor be split to get the rear main seal holder off and I really don't want to do that. All the main bearings were in pretty good condition in any case other than the ones holding the oil pump and balancer.
A YouTube video from Deboss Garage had a really useful tip for "rolling the mains" without having to remove the crank.
I'm going to clean the head up tomorrow with a bit of luck and hopefully get the top end buttoned up while I wait for the oil seals.
Tractor Spare Parts are Leyland and Nuffield specialists and have been brilliant. They sent a set of seals out FOC last week, but the post must have lost them so are sending another set out also FOC.

Oil seals arrived via tracked post today. Bottom end is done and sump is on. Just got the head to sort out. Pushrod engine should be running tomorrow afternoon with a bit of luck.

It lives!
Made good oil pressure on cranking so I bled the fuel system and got it started.
Leaky core plug on the head so I've ordered a set. I've filled it with liquid metal for the time being.
I've had to order a new fuel tap as the old one stripped and started leaking when I connected the tank back up.
I've also ordered a new oil filter to give it change after a few hours work.
I'm going to give it run tomorrow for half an hour as the manual suggests, re torque the head, adjust the valves again and then its going on the mower!

Took it up the road for half an hour this morning and the torqued the head.
It's ran the flail all day quite happily. It must be making good power. It pulled up the big hill outside the village in top gear - it couldn't do that before.
No smoke, nothing out of the crankcase breather, no untoward noises and the oil is really clean.
Bonnet can go back on now. I'm a very happy man right now.
